Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A Caribbean Mystery" begins with Miss Marple in St. Honore and recovering from a recent illness. Who paid for Miss Marple's trip?

Answer: Her nephew, Raymond

Miss Marple frequently talks about her nephew Raymond West, an author, and how he treats her to things. Raymond paid for her vacation to St. Honore in the Caribbean. However, Miss Marple finds the beaches and the sun to be boring as there is no adventure around - at first.
2. One day, Major Palgrave is telling Miss Marple a series of tedious and long stories about his younger days. Miss Marple barely listens until the major brings up a murder. He says he has a photograph of a wife killer and goes to show Miss Marple. However, he quickly changes his mind when people walk by. Miss Marple notes that the major may have been spooked by people behind Miss Marple's right shoulder. Who were these people?

Answer: The Dysons and the Hillingdons

To Miss Marple, Major Palgrave's fright at seeing the Dysons and the Hillingdons means one of them must be implicated. Edward Hillingdon and Greg Dyson both seem to be likely wife killers. Both are shady and there seems to be some mystery surrounding the death of Greg's first wife on the island years before.

The Dysons and Hillingdons are also close friends, yet say they actually know very little of each other.
3. When Major Palgrave dies under mysterious circumstances, who does Miss Marple ask to retrieve the alleged photograph of the wife killer?

Answer: Dr. Graham

As a physician, Dr. Graham was the most likely person to be able to collect the photograph. Miss Marple never saw the picture, but she knew it was of a man walking out of a house. She told Dr. Graham it was a photo of her nephew that Major Palgrave accidentally put in his wallet. Dr. Graham tells her that he found no such photograph in the wallet.
4. Victoria, a local girl who works in the Kendall's hotel, finds a bottle of blood pressure medication called Serenite in Major Palgrave's belongings. What does she find odd about this?

Answer: The bottle had never been in the major's room before

Victoria frequently cleaned Major Palgrave's room and she had never seen a Serenite bottle before. Moreover, it is not entirely clear if Major Palgrave had high blood pressure, which is what everyone assumed he died from. Most of the guests mentioned at one point or another that Major Palgrave did have blood pressure issues but no one can confirm they heard the rumor from the major himself.
5. Who did the bottle of Serenite pills found in Major Palgrave's room belong to?

Answer: Greg Dyson

The Serenite pills were Greg Dyson's, who also suffered from high blood pressure. Victoria confronted Dyson about it one night. He admitted the pills were his, but said he didn't put them in the major's room. He also says that anyone could have entered his cabin, taken the pills and put them in Major Palgrave's.

His and Victoria's conversation ends with Victoria seeming to blackmail him over the issue.
6. What does Ed Hillingdon confess to his wife, Evelyn?

Answer: He helped kill Greg Dyson's first wife

The Dysons and the Hillingdons had long been traveling companions. This is true even when Greg Dyson was married to his first wife. That Mrs. Dyson, who was always sick, died one night. Rumors at the time were that Greg killed her so he could marry Lucky, his wife's cousin and caretaker. Lucky was young and pretty.

Ed tells Evelyn that he was in love with Lucky. Evelyn already knew that. The Hillingdons' marriage has long been unhappy and they only stay together for the sake of their children. Ed confesses that Lucky had tricked him into buying various poisons that she used to kill Mrs. Dyson. Ed says he had no idea that was Lucky's plan when he bought the poison. He fell out of love with Lucky when she married Greg and Ed realized she was just using him.
7. Which character finds Victoria murdered one night?

Answer: Molly Kendall

Molly had been feeling strange for a few days and this was noticed by her husband Tim and some of their guests. During a particularly busy night, Molly stepped outside to get fresh air and found Victoria stabbed to death. Victoria's murder is important because the guests and the Kendalls can no longer convince themselves Major Palgrave died naturally.

However, they begin pushing a theory that Victoria's boyfriend must have killed her, though no one really believes that and they must all come to terms with the idea that a killer is among them.
8. Miss Marple is convinced that if she can find that missing photograph of Major Palgrave's, she find his and Victoria's killer. She asks the other guests at the hotel if Palgrave told them a story about a murderer. She soon learns that he did, but it seems he told everyone a different story. Miss Marple teams up with Mr. Rafiel who doesn't think Major Palgrave's story was true. Which of the following is TRUE regarding Major Palgrave's murder story?

Answer: It was about a wife killer

Mr. Rafiel, a bitter and elderly man, reminds Miss Marple that Major Palgrave liked to tell tall tales and that no one really listened to him closely enough to get the story straight, if it was true at all. This appears to be the case, as some guests told Miss Marple the story was about a husband killer. Miss Marple, who also did not listen closely, swears the major said a wife killer who tried to make it look like his wife committed suicide only to fail to kill her before succeeding.

Mr. Rafiel also says that even if Major Palgrave believed he was telling the truth, there is no proof his story is accurate, as he heard this story from a friend years ago who gave him the photograph. This puts an idea in Miss Marple's head, that Major Palgrave recognized the murderer in the photograph as someone at the hotel but he had not initially recognized him because several years had passed and the man looked different.
9. When Molly disappears again during the night, a search party is organized. Searchers come across a dead body in the creek bed and think it is Molly's. Who does it turn out to be?

Answer: Lucky Dyson

Both Lucky and Molly were youngish women with blonde hair. In the darkness, they could pass for each other. Since the searchers initially believed Lucky was Molly, Miss Marple reasons her killer must have the done the same thing and realizes Molly is still in danger. Miss Marple feels no empathy for Lucky's death since she believed Lucky was not a good person and killed the first Mrs. Dyson.
10. Miss Marple identifies Tim Kendall as the killer. He wanted to kill Molly so he could marry Esther Williams, who was set to inherit a lot of money upon Mr. Rafiel's death, which was likely imminent. What piece of evidence does Miss Marple cite as the clue that pointed to Tim?

Answer: Major Palgrave's glass eye

Major Palgrave had a left eye made of glass. Thus when he was telling Miss Marple his murder story, he could not see over her right shoulder. What caused him to panic must have been something he saw over her left shoulder, where Tim and Molly Kendall were sitting.

The photograph was never discovered, but Tim all but admits it when he is confronted. He put belladonna in Molly's cosmetics so she would have nightmares and wander off. He could then kill her and make it look like a suicide or accident.
