Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Though the main character went by the name Julie, what was her actual name?

Answer: Delma

She was born Delma Arsenault, but went by Julie Hall. Hall was the last name of her grandparents, who'd raised her after she was born.
2. What device did Julie use most often when trying to locate a person's body?

Answer: Dowsing rods

For some reason she had the ability to locate a corpse by using dowsing rods. Later in the book she used a method called pendulum dowsing as well. But, it only worked properly after she received some advice from an expert.
3. Julie became angry with her friend Katie for stealing money from her wallet.

Answer: False

Katie had been her only friend as a child, and they'd both left their small town after school ended. Julie returned after her vicious grandmother passed away, and Katie popped in whenever the mood stuck her. Julie caught Katie having sex with her boyfriend Denny, effectively killing both relationships with one mistake.
4. With which law enforcement agency was Agent Garrett Pierce?

Answer: FBI

Agent Pierce came to Julie for help locating three missing women, who were the victims of a local serial killer. He had done a lot of research on Julie before coming to her house, but hadn't known that she did not use the name Delma Arsenault.
5. How did Julie refer to the painful memories from her past?

Answer: Quicksand thoughts

Her grandmother had issued continuous abuse throughout Julie's childhood, and tortured her for any reason she wanted. Some of Julie's quicksand thoughts included being beaten to the point of scarring, having her wrist broken, and being located inside a shed when it was freezing cold. Julie had gotten herself out of that shed, and the memory of that moment actually helped her later on in the book.

The Great Sadness was used in the book/movie "The Shack", and the Sunken Place is from the horror movie "Get Out".
6. Did Julie and Agent Pierce become romantically involved?

Answer: Yes

Despite being warned by another agent named Jill, when Garrett turned to Julie for comfort, she did not turn him away. They'd shared some very intense moments during their hunt for a killer, and he'd been grieving his wife and son for several years. They'd been killed by a drunk driver. Garrett was described as being close to twenty years older than Julie, but they quickly came to care very deeply for one another.
7. What was the name of Julie's rottweiler?

Answer: Wookie

Agent Pierce asked her if she was a fan of "Star Wars", but she said he came to her with that name, and she didn't think it was right for her to change it. He'd originally been Katie's dog, but Katie gave up on him when he became too much work. Julie had owned him for five years in book one.
8. Which of her relatives did Julie search for unsuccessfully?

Answer: Mother

She found her mom's last known address in Agent Pierce's files, and went looking for her. What she found at that address was her mom's ex-boyfriend Ted, and he cleared up a lot of questions Julie had. Her teenage mom had gone to rehab right after Julie/Delma was born, and thought her parents would give the baby to social services to be adopted.

She later realized that her baby couldn't be adopted out without her permission, but ultimately decided not to look for her. Actually, since she technically abandoned Julie, she could have been adopted out. Molly Arsenault had married Julie's father, but he died in the Gulf War before Julie had been born. Ted's girlfriend told Julie that she'd heard that Molly had overdosed and died a while back, but she did not know for sure.
9. Who turned out to be the serial killer?

Answer: Gramps, Julie's grandfather

After Julie had been drugged and kidnapped while in Jonas' company, she believed he was the killer (naturally). Jonas was her extremely friendly co-worker at the gas station, and Julie really enjoyed his friendship. She awoke tied up and locked inside a shed, but was able to free herself and escape.

A massive hunt was underway for Jonas, who was actually locked up in one of Gramps' fishing shacks. So, Julie was kidnapped again by Gramps, who took her to where he had Katie captive. Katie was starved and bruised, and suffering badly.

She'd been captive for about four days at that point. It turned out that Julie's grandmother had known what her husband was (a killer) and held it over his head in order to be able to abuse Julie without his interference.

In the end, Julie saved Katie from her grandfather. She then spent three months in a psychiatric hospital recovering from past and recent traumas. She and Wookie moved in with Garrett after she was released.
10. Now very publicly known, Julie decided to start a business helping people find the bodies of missing loved ones. What did she name it?

Answer: Divine Reunions

She spent awhile at Garrett's just kind of staying out of the real world. She ended her relationship with Katie, despite the fact that Katie had written her every day she was in the hospital. But, finally, Julie became tired of doing nothing. So, she went back through some of the emails she'd received shortly after she'd been forced into the public eye. She replied to someone wanting to find their missing person, and said she was willing to work if they still wanted to hire her. So, with that, she created Divine Reunions. Another word for searching with dowsing rods is divining.

I look forward to the next book in the series.
