He was also awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1982. He was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984, by President Ronald Reagan. "Bendigo Shafter" was originally published in 1979. It is about a young man traveling to Wyoming in the 1800s.

Answer: Hondo

In 1952, L'Amour wrote a short story called "A Gift of Cochise", which inspired John Wayne to produce a movie based on it. "Hondo" had a script written by Robert M. Fellows, and starred John Wayne. L'Amour, who had reserved the rights for a novelisation of the film, then wrote the novel "Hondo".

He was hired to write them. L'Amour was told to use a pen name because they didn't think that someone with a name like Louis L'Amour would be able to sell western books. Little did they know!
