Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Outlaws of Mesquite" Why was Milt Cogar advised to leave town?

Answer: Another man wanted his horses, and he was a stranger to town.

A man named Thacker told Cogar to leave. Cogar was a stranger and another man, Dan Spencer, wanted Cogar's good horses. Thacker's reasoning for telling Cogar was that the other man had done him a couple of favors, and he was simply returning the favor. Mesquite, the town, was a rustler's town, which was why they didn't like strangers much. Cogar's horses were originally wild, and the first time he came to town, he had sixteen of them.

They were of good breeding and most were broke to ride, which was why they were so desirable.
2. "The Outlaws of Mesquite" Jennie Lewis and Milt Cogar held off Dan Spencer's men after fleeing town. While she also did a few other things, what was the one thing Jennie mostly did?

Answer: Reloaded the guns

Jennie offered to reload the .44 rifle for Cogar while he used the six-guns to fight them off. They were holed up into a hollow when Spencer's men came after them for "stealing" Jennie from Spencer.
3. "Love and the Cactus Kid" Jenny Simms insisted that if the Cactus Kid, Nesselrode Clay, loved her, he would get her flowers. What was the only thing wrong with that theory?

Answer: There weren't many flowers around because it was so dry.

While out on a picnic, Jenny brought up the topic of flowers. She had told all the girls in town he was getting her flowers. The only problem was that the surrounding country was almost completely dry, so Clay would have to ride a long ways into the mountains to find them.
4. "Love and the Cactus Kid" How many Herring brothers did Nesselrode Clay, aka the Cactus Kid, bring back to town with Jenny Simms' flowers?

Answer: All three

Red, Ben, and Joe Herring caught the Cactus Kid because they were going through the area on their way out of the country, and they didn't want to leave witnesses. He turned the tables on them and managed to catch all three to bring back into town, where Jenny was enamoured with the flowers and disinclined to be concerned about the outlaws.
5. "The Ghost Maker" Did Marty Mahan ever stop fearing Ghost Maker?

Answer: No

Yes, Mahan finally got over his fear at the end of the book, at least enough to save Yannell Stoper. Stoper had taken Ghost Maker when Mahan refused. When Stoper found out about Mahan's fear, it was at a rodeo in Twin Forks. Ghost Maker was supposed to be ridden by Mahan, but he ducked out, and the man who took him, Bud Cameron, was unable to walk again.

Mahan's fear stemmed from finding Ghost Maker out wild. The horse was a big zebra dun, and walked toward Mahan and his own horse, rather than run. Mahan had been seventeen, and Ghost Maker killed his saddle horse, then came after Mahan in the rocks.
6. "The Drift" How many nights had Johnny Garrett been on night riding?

Answer: All week

Garrett had been on night riding for the past week, since he was the newest ranch hand. When offered the horse of another hand, he declined, stating that his own horse needed to learn.
7. "The Drift" At the end, Smoke Lamson was still the foreman of the Bar X ranch.

Answer: False

No, he wasn't. At the very end, the second-to-last paragraph stated that Bart Gavin had fired Lamson, and Johnny Garrett was the new foreman.
8. "No Rest for the Wicked" The narrator, Lou Morgan, held which position in town?

Answer: Marshal

Morgan was the town's marshal, or sheriff. He was sweet on Marla Neil.
9. "No Rest for the Wicked" What did many men from the town go after?

Answer: A mine

They went after the Lost Village mine. Lou Morgan's mother passed a map down to her son, so Morgan knew that there was no gold in the mine, and Larik Feist, a swindler, had tricked the men. Morgan instructed Luke Fair to take water and food to the men, following their trail out of town, while he went after Feist.

However, there had never been any gold nearby. The so-called mine was ten miles away, and was currently being worked. The village itself had formerly been occupied, but the people left when the water source dried up.
10. "That Packsaddle Affair" Why did Fallon and Porter grab Elaine when she arrived in town on the stagecoach?

Answer: They thought she had the map to her father's mine.

Elaine's father had discovered what he thought was a rich gold deposit, and Fallon and Porter had killed him trying to stop him from lodging the claim. She had no information for them, but it turned out that Red Clanahan did - he helped her trick the two men into paying her $15000 (which they thought was a measly sum for a fortune) in exchange for the claim to the mine, but Clanahan knew that it was actually a virtually worthless mine, so he saved both their lives and garnered them a tidy sum.

If this sounds familiar, you may have see nthe epidsoed of the television show 'Maverick' which was based on this story.
