Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'A Clockwork Orange' by Anthony Burgess What is the name of the language that Alex speaks throughout the book?

Answer: Nadsat

Nadsat is loosely based on Slavic and Russian words which causes some confusion and puzzle solving until you get used to the unfamiliar words! Try to understand this bit:
'I viddy. I viddy horrowshow.'
(I see. I see good (fine).'
2. 'A Little Princess' by Frances Hodgson Burnett Who is 'the prisoner in the next cell' and Sara's 'fellow-sufferer'?

Answer: Becky

When Sara's papa dies, she is left a pauper and the cold Miss Minchin makes her work very hard and sleep in a dingy attic, a very different life from the luxurious one she had led before. Becky is the scullery maid and one of Sara's closest friend and the two children pretend that they are in the Bastille together.
3. 'The Little Prince' by Antoine de Saint-Exupery The little prince's present to the pilot at the end of the book is his laughter.

Answer: True

Before the little prince goes back to his star and his flower that he has tamed, he laughs for the pilot and tells him that now when the pilot looks at the sky, he will remember the prince and want to laugh with him. 'In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing, when you look at the sky at night...'
4. 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' by Tracy Chevalier Why does Griet have to go and work for the Vermeers?

Answer: Her father lost his sight and cannot work

Griet's father had been a tile painter but when a kiln exploded, it took his eyes and killed two men. As he is now blind, Griet must support the family and goes to work as a maid to the artist, Johannes Vermeer.
5. 'The Godfather' by Mario Puzo Who is Don Corleone's eldest son?

Answer: Santino

A rare instance when I enjoyed the film as much as I enjoyed the book - both are excellent!
"Friendship is everything. Friendship is more than talent. It is more than government. It is almost the equal of family."
6. 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen True or False: Mr Collins absolutely detests Lady Catharine de Bourgh.

Answer: False

In fact, Mr Collins adores and worships Lade Catharine!
"She is the sort of woman whom one cannot regard with too much deference."
We get a slightly different picture later but each to his opinion!
7. 'Love Story' by Erich Segal What does Jenny call her father?

Answer: Phil

Unlike Oliver, Jenny gets on with her father really well and the two are very close, she describes him as "a truly good guy".
The most heart-rending and memeroable quote from this book:
"Love means not ever having to say you're sorry."
8. "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger Henry and Clare name their daughter...

Answer: Alba

In the most bizarre but interesting relationship of Henry and Clare (where going forward into the future or backwards into the past is normal for Henry), they manage to find time to have a baby who grows up to be "beautiful" and "like a young cat".
"Alba DeTamble. It rolls around in my mouth as I say it."
9. "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith True of False: Cherry brandy is Cassandra's favourite drink (liqueur).

Answer: True

Rose, Cassandro, Simon and Neil all have lunch at the inn in the village and there Cassandra discovers the taste of cherry brandy.
"Could I have a cherry brandy? I've always wanted to taste it....Cherry brandy is wonderful."
10. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" by J.K. Rowling Who does Mrs Weasley fancy?

Answer: Gilderoy Lockhart

Lockhart became the Defence of the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts and Mrs Weasley, along with many other witches (including Hermione!), "fancies him" due to his blond hair and charming manner.
