Eddie lives with his wife, Beatrice, and his niece, Catherine in Red Hook - an Italian-American slum in Brooklyn.

They are both immigrants from Sicily, trying to find work in America. Marco has a wife and three children, whom he left in Sicily, and he sends all he earns back to his wife to support them.
