Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most people called Eddie's father "Minty" due to his love of breath mints. What did Ted Cole call him?

Answer: Pushy

People called Mr. O'Hare "Minty" because he ate a lot of breath mints. Ted considered him to have a bit of an aggressive nature, hence the nickname.
2. Ted called himself "an entertainer of children." How did Ruth describe her father's line of work?

Answer: Unhappy mothers

Ted did not like being considered an author, although that was in fact his line of work, writing and illustrating children's books. His marriage to Ruth's mother was not a happy one.
3. Thomas and Timothy both played soccer and hockey. Thomas also played lacrosse and Timothy tried tennis. What was Ted's sport?

Answer: Squash

Ted was quite competitive at squash. His sons were interested in a wider range of sporting activities.
4. What was Minty's real name?

Answer: Joseph

His name was Joseph E. O'Hare, with the E standing for Edward.
5. Mrs. Anna Havelock had two nicknames among the student body, both as a result of her hippie lifestyle. What was one of them?

Answer: Bouncy

Bouncy came from her bra-less lifestyle, and Furry because she did not shave her armpits.
6. What school did Eddie (and later Ruth) attend?

Answer: Phillips Exeter Academy

Philips Exeter Academy is a real school in New Hampshire. The author himself graduated from there. Gravesend (from "A Prayer for Owen Meany") and Steering (from "The World According to Garp") are fictionalized versions of Philips Exeter. Dairy School is from "The Hotel New Hampshire".
7. Who was the manager of the frame shop?

Answer: Mrs. Penny Pierce

Mrs. Pierce was captivated by Eddie's story of how he spent the summer and hoped the next summer would be spent in a similar way with her.
8. What year did Ruth graduate from the school previously attended by her brothers?

Answer: 1973

The school began accepting girls just two years before she started going there.
9. When Ted told Eddie the story of his sons' deaths, Eddie asked only one question. Which one?

Answer: What kind of shoe?

Fixating on the shoe is a little weird, but it turned out to be a sneaker. The boys died in a car accident, with their parents in the car, a tragedy which nobody is allowed to forget.
10. "The Mouse Crawling Between the Walls" drawings were done in India ink, Ted's favorite black ink. Was "A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound" done with a different ink?

Answer: Yes

It was done with fresh squid ink, "a sepia-like color with a fish smell" that Eddie had spent the summer driving all over Long Island to get from the one fish seller who would save the ink for Ted.
