Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film "Simon Birch" is loosely based on which Irving novel?

Answer: A Prayer for Owen Meany

The film doesn't touch at all upon the war issues raised in the novel and is not as comic as the novel.
2. In "Hotel New Hampshire", the family comforts each other with the phrase "Sorrow floats". Who/what was/is Sorrow?

Answer: The family dog

The flatulent dog (who also happens to have been stuffed after his unfortunate demise) is lost in a plane crash over the Atlantic.
3. The Garps lose a child ("The World According to Garp") in a tragic auto accident. What was the child's name?

Answer: Walt

If only he'd been wearing a seat belt....Duncan, his brother, ends up losing an eye in the accident, which involved the car, driven by Garp, ramming into the other car in the dark.
4. The accident discussed in Question 3 from "The World According to Garp" is caused, in part, by Helen's affair. With whom did Helen have this affair?

Answer: A graduate student

The poor "gradual" student also lost an important part of himself...perhaps with some justice! "Gradual student" was what one of the boys once used to describe Helen's "graduate" students, but having been one on two occasions, I agree that gradual may be more accurate.
5. In "Cider House Rules", a major female character from the book is omitted from the film. She called Homer "Sunshine". What's her name?

Answer: Melony

In his book about the film, "My Movie Business", Irving explained why he regretted the omission, but also why it was necessary...Melony would have dominated Homer's character, as she did in the book, and would have made for an entirely different (and longer) film.
6. In "Cider House Rules", Candy has a baby fathered by Homer Wells. What's the child's name?

Answer: Angel

They tell Wally, Candy's husband, that Angel was adopted...a lie Wally allows them to believe HE believes, essentially forgiving his wife's infidelity.
7. In "A Prayer for Owen Meany", who is responsible for the death of John's mother?

Answer: Owen

The scene is similar in both the book and the film, when Owen/Simon hits a baseball that strikes John's mother on the noggin, killing her.
8. Who is the oldest sibling in "Hotel New Hampshire"?

Answer: Frank

John, through whose eyes the story is told, says Franny was "the loudest". John was the middle of the five children. (Lilly and Egg were the youngest.)
9. In "Hotel New Hampshire", she has such a lack of confidence in her own looks that she walks around in a bear suit. Her name, please.

Answer: Suzie

She's referred to, in almost every reference, as "Suzie the bear".
10. In "Cider House Rules", with whom does Angel fall in love?

Answer: Rose Rose

Which leads to Homer's knowledge of the relationship between Rose Rose and her father.
