Alex Rider #9: Scorpia Rising Trivia Quiz

Dying billionaire Ariston Xenopolos wants Scorpia to steal the Elgin marbles, stolen from the Parthenon 200 years ago, and return them to Greece. One of Scorpia's operatives, Razim, comes up with the idea of blackmailing the British government into returning the marbles.

Razim's plan is to manipulate MI6 into sending Alex on a certain mission, then to manipulate Alex's actions once he arrives so he falls into their hands. They intend to frame him - and the British government - for an assassination, thus giving them leverage over the government and allowing them to force Britain to return the Elgin marbles.

Kroll attempts to leave Scorpia, angry at the decisions being made and believing that the organization is finished. However, Zeljan Kurst signals a sniper to shoot Kroll, whose body is dumped into the Thames...clues having been planted on it first.

Julius Grief is one of the sixteen clones created by Dr. Hugo Grief. In "Point Blanc", he had been altered to look like Alex, and was badly burned in a fight with Alex at Brookland School. Having been imprisoned in Gibraltar since then, he escapes with the help of Scorpia.

In the four months since Alex's last mission, he has begun to live a normal schoolboy life. He has gotten involved in several activities, one of which is drama: "He was playing Teen Angel in the summer production of 'Grease,' although he still wasn't convinced he could actually sing." After escaping the House of Gold explosion, Alex is taken to the CIA's Cairo headquarters. One of the agents, Blake Lewinsky, begins to waterboard him, but he is rescued by Joe Byrne.

When Alex is meeting with Smithers at the latter's safe house in Cairo, a "delivery man" stops by with a package for "Mr. Derek Smithers." However, the delivery man is a Scorpia agent sent to kill Smithers, and thanks to all the gadgets rigged up in the house, Smithers recognizes this and drops him down a trapdoor.

Smithers is forced to deploy his last gadget, a fat suit which he has worn throughout the entire series, in order to escape the hordes of Scorpia agents chasing him. Alex sees the real Smithers for the first time - a slender Irishman in his thirties.

Razim has been conducting experiments in order to determine a measurement scale for pain. As part of this, he kidnaps Jack and Alex, then forces Alex to watch Jack escape. However, Razim has manipulated every bit of Jack's escape...including the Land Rover with keys in the ignition and plastic explosive under the seat.

Gunter is planning to kill Alex after Julius assassinates the Secretary of State at the Assembly Hall; however, Alex tricks Gunter into reaching into a cigarette pack containing a scorpion, both taken from Razim's compound. Blunt was asked to step down by the new prime minister, who was outraged that MI6 was using a teenage agent. In her first act as Head of Special Operations, Mrs. Jones closes Alex Rider's file, ensuring that he will never be used again.

It is also revealed that Alan Blunt organized the Brookland shooting so that Alex would feel threatened enough to go to Cairo; however, Mrs. Jones does not punish Blunt for this. We also learn that Blunt is married and is going to be knighted.
