Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both families live in Pineville, Kentucky, but they pick different sides in the Civil War. Which side did the Carters' son fight for?

Answer: North

Royal fought for the North, while his father went along behind the army selling supplies. The Majors (Nelson, Tom, and Jeff) fought for the South.
2. For over half of the war, Jeff Majors is a drummer boy in the Confederate Army. What is the first battle he fights in?

Answer: Fort Stedman

Jeff fights in the Battle of Fort Stedman a few months after turning eighteen. As Gilbert Morris so ingeniously put it, he spends most of his time being "bored to death or scared to death".
3. Shortly after the Majors family moves to Richmond, Virginia, Nelson's wife gives birth to a healthy baby girl, Esther, then, sadly, passes away. What was Mrs. Majors' first name?

Answer: Irene

Shortly after Irene's death, the Carters take Esther back to Pineville and raise her. A few years later Nelson re-marries to a woman named Eileen who lost her husband in the war.
4. A few young men from Royal's home town enlist and find themselves in Royal's squad. One of the young men has a reputation for fighting, but in the end, he converts to a fiery Christian. He and Royal even fight over the same girl, Lori Jenkins. What is this young man's name?

Answer: Drake

Drake, Rosie, and Royal make up the close group from Pineville. They go through the war together, but only at the end do they learn to get along. After Royal saves Drake's life in battle, Drake finally sees the Light, and allows Royal to share Jesus with him.

The true test comes when Lori picks Royal over him. Drake learns to live with it, and Drake and Royal return home, friends for life.
5. Rosie is another fellow from Pineville. He's a good-natured young man but has an imaginary condition. The other fellows in his squad often tease him about this fear, but Rosie remains undaunted. What is this make-believe condition?

Answer: hypochondria

Although perfectly healthy, Rosie insists on taking "new-fangled" pills and other such rememdies for imagined diseases.
6. Towards the end of the series, Rosie meets a girl from Tennessee and falls in love with her. She in turn is in love with Drake. At the end though, she and Rosie, and Royal and Lorie have a double wedding. What is Rosie's girl's name?

Answer: Charlie

Taken captive in Tennessee, Charlie is brought to Lori's aunt's house to be taken care of. Lori forms an instant bond with Charlie, and the two become very close. Although Charlie is more interested in blue nosed mules than social gatherings, Rosie likes her that way.
7. In the turning point of the war, Tom loses a limb at Gettysburg. Thinking Sarah no longer loves him, he returns to Pineville feeling rejected. Sarah shows him that deep down inside, he's still the same man he was before. Which limb did he lose?

Answer: leg

During Gettysburg, a shell explodes and shatters Tom's leg. Jeff asks a kindly farmer to take care of him until something can be done. A few days later Jeff shows up with Sarah. Sarah determines to get him home alive, and she does exactly that.
8. Back home in Pineville, Leah waits anxiously for letters from her father, brother, or one of the Majors boys. The mail is delivered by a nosy old mail carrier who often talks to his mule. What is his mule's name?

Answer: Clementine

Leah often hears him coming because of his loud singing to his mule Clementine. Because Leah refuses to read the letters to him, he often remarks that she "is more stubborn than Clementine".
9. The youngest in the Carter family is a very sweet little girl. Though she's sweet and pretty, she will never develop mentally. What is her name?

Answer: Morena

Although mentally Morena is about a year old, the Carters and Majors love her dearly. Morena also finds little ways to show her affections for them too.
10. At the end of the last book, a very special event takes place for the Majors household. Eileen gives birth to healthy baby boy. What do they name him?

Answer: Stonewall Jackson

Nelson named his baby boy after the man he looked up to. During the war, Nelson admired Stonewall from the start. He named his little baby that as a way to honor Stonewall.
