Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy and basic question to begin with: what four lands are considered borderlands at the moment the series takes place.

Answer: Shienar, Arafel, Kandor, Saldaea

Shienar, Arafel, Kandor, and Saldaea are the four northernmost countries of the Randland. Their northern border are Mountains of Doome and the Blight itself - burnt, destroyed and poisoned lands, tortured by the Dark One. The mission of the people of Borderlands is to fight against the Blight, in order to protect the rest of the world.

They are at constant war against the Shadow, and their way of life is greatly affected by it.
2. There used to be a fifth Borderland, but it was swallowed by the Blight. What is the name of the land?

Answer: Malkier

Malkier fell in the year 953 of the Third Age. It was weakened by the constant struggle and jealosy in the royal family, and was savaged by the hordes of Trollocs that came from the Blight. The surviviors were few, and they fled south, Al'Lan Mandragoran among them. Lan was the heir to the Throne, and now is called 'uncrowned king of Malkier'among other names.
3. The ruler of the fifth Borderland, now swallowed by the Blight, used to have several titles. Which one of these is NOT among them?

Answer: Tai Shar

Malkier was ruled by either king or queen and their spouse equally. They used to swear to fight against the Shadow when they took the crown. Lord of the Lakes refers to the beautiful Malkieri lakes, which were just one feature of fantastic natural beauties of Malkier. Dai Shan meansd 'Diademed Battle Lord' in the Old Tongue.

As for 'tai'shar', it means 'true blood' (as in tai'shar Manetheren), and is not among the titles.
4. The culture of the fifth Borderland, now swallowed by the Blight, was unique in many ways. No other nation wore 'hadori', or 'ki'sain', for example. What is a ki'sain?

Answer: A dot painted in the center of woman's forhead

Malkieri women used to paint ki'sai on their foreheads, as a sign that their sons would be (or were) sworn to fight the Shadow. Women in mourning wore a white ki'sain, and women of marriageable age wore a blue one.
The headband worn by men pledged to fight the Shadow is called 'hadori'
There was also a custom about cutting of a boy's hair when he came of age. Then the hair would be braided into a rope ('daori'), and young men would give it to their 'carneiras'.
5. Let's move to the other Borderlands. What is considered to be a 'nameday' (birthday) of a Borderlander?

Answer: The day he gets his weapons

Since their lives are dedicated to war, Borderlanders consider the day they first get their weapons - the most important day of their lives. In 'The Great Hunt' Rand once says 'I am barely a year old', meaning it's been only a year since he had got a sword.
6. Shienar lies in the northeast of the continent, and its capital is Fal Moran. Shienarans are considered tough, brave people, and a well known Shienaran saying is 'Death is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain'. What are the three things Shienaran people value most?

Answer: Peace, beauty, and life

Peace - because they have only known war, beauty - because they live so close to the ugliness of the Blight, and life - because they have already sworn themselves to death.
7. In Shienar there is a rule: one must keep one's face uncovered, and it is supposed to be protection against what?

Answer: Myrddraal

Myrdraal wear black cloaks with hoods covering their eyeless faces. If people were allowed to wear hoods, there would be no telling apart humans from the myrddraal. There are also other ways of protection against shadowspawn sneaking into a city: cities have walls around them, and the ground around the walls is cleared at least a mile in diameter, so no enemy can approach unnoticed. Also, the street lamps are all lit by night.
8. What is the Shienarans' view on Aes Sedai?

Answer: They respect them

Aes Sedai are greatly respected in Shienar, because they too fight against the Shadow. Aes Sedai, on their part, consider borderlanders to be great warders, and they often go to Shienar in search of a warder.
9. Which of the Borderlands is (or was) famous for its merchant guilds?

Answer: Kandor

People from Kandro are world-wide famous merchants as well as fighters. Kandor is the only borderland with merchant guilds. Kandori export stone and very fine jewelry known as snowflakes.
10. If a Saldaean man went to war, what would his wife do?

Answer: Follow him to war, but not fight

In Saldaea, war is considered a family matter. But, although wives follow their husbands to war, they normally do not fight. They are not trained with swords, but they are usually very skilled with knives, as well as in combat without weapons.
11. Which of these goods does Saldaea export?

Answer: Ice peppers

Saldaea exports ice peppers (Lan's favorite food) as well as furs, but the nation exporting jewelry and stone is Kandor.
12. What is so unique about Arafellin style of combat?

Answer: They use two swords at once

People of Arafel wear two swords on their back, with hilts sticking out above their shoulders. These swords are light one-handers, but are very sharp and well balanced. Arafellin people fight with a sword in each hand and no sheild, and they are also very found of horses.
13. What is the usual hair-style of an Arafellin man?

Answer: Two braids, bells at the ends

Arafellin man wear their hair in two long braids, tied with bells, usually made of gold and silver. They seem to be really fond of bells, as they also sew them on their clothes sometimes. Women also wear bells in their hair.
Long hair in a pony tail is characteristic for men of Far Madding, and the headband is worn by Malkieri and is called 'hadori'
14. Which of these is a title of Kandori ruler?

Answer: Shield of the North

Kandor is ruled by a king or queen, and their other title is 'Protector of the Land'. If the land is ruled by a queen, her husband is called 'Prince Consort' or 'Swordbearer', and he acts as a commander of her armies. The royal palace in Chachin is called Aesdaishar, and the throne is called Throne of Clouds.
15. If you were to meet a Kandori man on the street, how would you recognize him?

Answer: earrings, forked beard

Kandori noblemen also wear one, two, or three silver chains across their chest, and wear coats made of coloured silk. Kandori noblewomen wear bright-coloured, high belted silk dresses.
