Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Eye of the World", Mat goes into a battle fever and calls out in Old Tongue. Which of the following is the correct translation of "Carai an Caldazar!"?

Answer: For the honour of the Red Eagle

Moiraine translates this for Egwene in "Eye of the World" when she questions Mat about what he said. It is an old war cry from the time of Manetheren.
2. Lan has a special name for Nynaeve which derives from the Old Tongue, meaning an impossible, or forsaken love. What is this name?

Answer: Mashiara

He first calls her this in "Eye of the World" in a very moving scene where he refuses to marry her. It is also later the name of the chapter in "A Crown of Swords" where they marry. (It's also my user name...)
3. Which of the following is best translated as "Web of Destiny"?

Answer: ta'maral'ailen

It means a great change in the Pattern, centering around one or more people who are ta'veren (like Rand, Mat and Perrin).
4. What is the full name of the complex code by which Aiel live?

Answer: ji'e'toh

In the Old Tongue, ji'e'toh means 'honour and obligation' or 'honour and duty'. It's incredibly confusing and complicated to explain. It centres mainly around the objective of gaining honour. There are many paths to gain honour in battle. The smallest is to kill, for anyone can kill.

The greatest is to touch an armed and living enemy without causing harm. Somewhere in the middle is to make an enemy gai'shain, a sort of temporary slavery from which they are freed after a year of service. So seriously is ji'e'toh taken that if a gai'shain ever escaped and returned home, their family would be so shamed they would send them back.
5. The political game of stategy that was create by the Aes Sedai and favoured by Cairheinin nobles is known as the Great Game, or the Game of Houses. What is its correct Old Tongue name?

Answer: Daes Dae'mar

This is the name given to the scheming, plots and manipulations for advantage by noble houses. Great value is given to subtlety, to aiming at one thing whilst seeming to aim at another, and to achieving ends with the least visible effort... and it produces some very humourous subplots and minor scenes too! Djevik K'Shar is the Trolloc word for the Aiel Waste, cuendillar is Old Tongue for heartstone and the Tuatha'an are the Tinkers!
6. True or False: In Seanchan, women who can channel but are not yet damane are known as marath'damane, literally 'those who must be leashed', in Old Tongue.

Answer: True

Marath'damane is an extension of damane, which can be literally translated as 'leashed ones'.
7. What was the Old Tongue name given to the sapling of the Tree of Life which was given to Cairhein by the Aiel?

Answer: Avendoraldera

Avendesora is the Old Tongue word for 'Tree of Life', but the actually single sapling given to Cairhien in 566 NE by the Aiel was called 'Avendoraldera'. When King Laman later cut down the sapling to use the wood to make a throne, it caused the Aiel War. Even now, the Aiel hold no respect for the Cairheinin.
8. Which of the Forsaken's chosen names is the Old Tongue translation of 'Daughter of the Night'?

Answer: Lanfear

Lanfear is the most powerful of the female Forsaken (or Chosen, depending which side of the fence you sit on), and possible the strongest of all, next to Ishamael. She is the only one of the Forsaken to choose her own name. In the Age of Legends she was in love with Lews Therin Telemon, and was greatly jealous of his love for Ilyena.

She seems to have carried this jealousy through to the Third Age, and therefore, to Rand al'Thor.
9. A tricky one... what was the battle cry for the last reigning king of Manetheren?

Answer: Carai an Ellisande

It means 'For the Honour of the Rose of the Sun'. One of the fevered battle cries Mat screams out in "The Eye of the World".
10. True or False: "Los Valdar Cuebiyari" was a battle cry from the War of the Shadow meaning "Forward the Red Eagle!"

Answer: False

It actually means "Forward the Heart Guard" or "The Heart Guard will advance". This can be found in one of Mat's hallucinations of the War of the Shadow in "The Dragon Reborn".
11. One of Mat's favourite sayings (which is VERY relevant to him!) is "Time to toss the dice". How does he say this in Old Tongue?

Answer: Dovie'andi se tovya sagain

It's one of MY favourite saying too...
12. Which is the correct spelling for the word meaning 'World of Dreams'?

Answer: Tel'aran'rhiod

The 'World of Dreams' is otherwise known as 'the Unseen World'.It is a world glimpsed only in dreams which was believed by many to permeate all the other possible worlds, which are navigated using the Portal Stones. Many can touch Tel'aran'rhiod for a few moments in their dreams, but few have ever had the ability to enter it at will without the aid of a ter'angreal. Egwene is one of these such Dreamers. Unlike other dreams, what happens to living things in the World of Dreams is real; a wound taken there will still exist on waking, and one who dies there will not wake at all.
13. Here's an easy one. Faile's name is Old Tongue for what?

Answer: Falcon

Pretty much sums her up, doesn't it? I mean, her knives are ALMOST like talons...
14. Aiel warriors wear a coat and breeches in browns and greys that fade into the rocks of the Aiel Waste called the cadin'sor. What is the best translation of this?

Answer: working clothes

It could have logically been any of these except for riding clothes. The Aiel do not ride horses, preferring to run alongside of them at speeds often greater than those the horse can maintain.
15. True or False: 'Far Dareis Mai'is the Old Tongue name for the Aiel society known as 'The Shield Maidens' or 'Maidens of the Shield'.

Answer: False

It is Old Tongue for 'Maidens of the Spear' or 'Of the Spear Maidens'. This Aiel society admits only women, and of these women, none are allowed to marry or have children. If a Maiden of the Spear DOES have a child, it is taken from her and given to another woman to raise, in such a way that no one knows who the child's mother is. "You may belong to no man, nor may any may belong to you, nor any child.

The spear is your lover, your child, and your life".
