Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Los Angeles detective Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch makes his seventeenth appearance for which author in the novel "The Burning Room"?

Answer: Michael Connelly

Orlando Merced is shot and paralysed. Ten years later he passes away from complications that arose from the wound, and still the shooter has not been found. It is only at Orlando's passing that doctors are able to remove the bullet. From it Harry is able to deduce that Orlando had been a targeted assassination attempt and not some random gangland shooting as had previously been thought.
Award winning author Michael Connelly and his world weary gumshoe Harry first appeared in 1992 with the release of "The Black Echo". "The Burning Room" was published in 2014.

2. Nabokov's postmodern novel "Pale Fire" gets its title from this quote: "The moon's an arrant thief, / And her pale fire she snatches from the sun". Where does the quote come from?

Answer: Shakespeare

The quote is from Shakespeare's "Timon of Athens", Act IV, scene 3. Some critics have also seen the title reflected in "Hamlet" Act I, scene 5: "The glowworm shows the matin to be near, And 'gins to pale his uneffectual fire." (Herbert Graves, "Nabokov and Shakespeare: The English Works")

Nabokov's novel is a 999 line poem written by John Shade with commentary and foreword provided by Charles Kinbote. The novel is not a traditional novel but is what is called metafiction in that it covers the interplay between Shade and Kinbote as well as the poem "Pale Fire" itself. In the end Kinbote takes over the novel and it is seen through his eyes but is it really? According to a 1962 interview (the year of the novel's publication), Nabokov asserted that professor Botkins was the real commentator.

3. Lisbeth Salander returns in the second installment of the "Millennium" series, "The Girl Who Played with Fire", by which Swedish author?

Answer: Stieg Larsson

A year after the events in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", Lisbeth sneaks back into Sweden after having laundered half a billion dollars into a disguised bank account. She begins to follow Mikael Blomkvist's latest investigation and finds herself tracking down a sex trafficking ring that will ultimately lead her to her father, a man that she despises intensely. Lisbeth is a master hacker and works for Milton Security as an investigator. She is the lead female character in all three installments of Stieg Larsson's "Millenium" series: "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest".

Stieg Larsson died in November 2004. All three of the "Millennium" novels were published posthumously.

4. In 2013 Dan Brown released "Inferno", his fourth Robert Langdon novel. What city is the backdrop for "Inferno", and includes such popular sites as the Vasari Corridor, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore?

Answer: Florence

Similar to some of the other Robert Langdon novels, "Inferno" centers on Langdon solving clues by using his knowledge of history, art, and science to prevent a global catastrophe. While most of "Inferno" takes place in Florence, there are also important scenes in Istanbul. The antagonist in "Inferno" is a self-described transhumanist named Bertrand Zobrist who releases a virus to deal with human population control.

5. "A Pleasure to Burn" is a collection of short stories by author Ray Bradbury that tracks the evolution of which classic novel?

Answer: Fahrenheit 451

First published in 2010, two years before Bradbury's death, "A Pleasure to Burn" is subtitled "Fahrenheit 451 Stories". It is a collection of 16 short stories that chronicle the origins of Bradbury's 1953 novel "Fahrenheit 451". Included in this group are "Long After Midnight" and "The Fireman", two novellas considered to be early versions of what would become "Fahrenheit 451".

Although most people consider "Fahrenheit 451" to be a story about government censorship, Bradbury considered it to be more about society and its seduction by mass media. Bradbury blamed the public more than the government for the censorship that he described.

Bradbury's novel even foresaw many of the gadgets we take for granted today. According to journalist Sam Weller, Bradbury predicted everything from flat-panel televisions to iPod ear buds and 24 hour ATMs (wiki).

6. The 1994 novel "SeaFire" by John Gardner sees which famous spy endeavour to foil the plans of a man who considers himself the next Adolf Hitler?

Answer: James Bond

Gardner was approached by, what is now, Ian Fleming Publications in 1979 to revive the stories of James Bond. Gardner would complete sixteen Bond novels, which included two film novelizations. John maintained the ages of the characters as Fleming had left them but brought them "into the 80s". He changed Bond's Bentley to a Saab, replaced his favoured Walther PPK and introduced to him to low tar cigarettes.
In "SeaFire" Bond teams up with his new girlfriend, Flicka von Grusse, who we first met in "Never Send Flowers", and they pursue the evil billionaire, Sir Maxwell Tarn, across Spain, Israel and Germany in an effort to prevent him from raising the Fourth Reich.
Oh, I forgot to mention, James proposes to Flicka... and that has not always worked out well for the Bond women.

7. Which author of a collection of 54 adventure stories called "Extraordinary Voyages" also penned the "The Archipelago on Fire", the story of a young French officer searching for his lost love amidst the Greek War for Independence?

Answer: Jules Verne

The French officer, Henry d'Albaret, joins the battle against pirates that have taken advantage of the conflict between the Greeks and Turks. Given command of the ship Syphanta, he battles Sacratif, the chief of the pirates, who, apart from being an outlaw, has designs on Henry's beloved.

8. "The Last Dragon Chronicles", written by English author Chris d'Lacey, is a set of seven novels that have a common word in their titles. What is that word?

Answer: Fire

"The Last Dragon Chronicles" consists of seven titles. They are, in reading order, "The Fire Within", "Icefire", "Fire Star", "The Fire Eternal", "Dark Fire", "Fire World" and "The Fire Ascending". They were imbued with life with liquid from the tear of the last dragon. As the story progresses, David learns about the origin of dragons and their vital role in the fabric of the universe.
