1. What is Katniss doing at the start of the book?

Katniss has been hunting and is making her way home at the beginning of the book. After she drops off the meat at Gale's house Katniss goes to the Hob for lunch. On the way out Katniss grabs Haymitch's liquor, and Greasy Sue teases her before she leaves to get ready.

After the Games his leg got amputated in the book, but not in the movie. Katniss forgot that he had one artificial leg and Peeta wasn't really used to it yet, so he fell.

He electrifies the fence, making it impossible for Katniss to hunt, and shocks her in the process. And if that were not enough, when the Capital loses viewership for the "Hunger Games", he bombs District 12 and burns down the Hob. The citizens of District 12 escape to District 13, where they are rescued.

Every 25 years there was a Quarter Quell in which something different than the norm happened. In the 25th Hunger Games, the district had to choose who would be part of the game rather than having their name randomly selected. In the 50th Hunger Games, there were twice as many tributes (48 instead of 24). This was the game in which Katniss and Peeta's mentor Haymitch Abernathy was the winner. In the 75th Hunger Games, the tributes were the previous victors.

When Katniss opened the box she discovered it was some kind of painkiller called morphling.

But she later finds out that it was actually to escape the arena and the capitol. Her (and Peeta's) mentor for the Hunger Games, Haymitch Abernathy, had actually planned for this and told a select few about the plan previous to the start of the games, and purposefully excluded her and Peeta from it.

At two-three o'clock wedge in the arena, it was the poisonous fog. The fog acted as a paralyser and soon affected Peeta too much to run, so Finnick carried him while Katniss carried Mags. Mags realised that she was slowing Katniss down too much and Finnick could not carry both her and Peeta, so she bravely sacrificed herself to the fog so the rest could get away.

Katniss arrived back in town, from the woods, to find the new Head Peacekeeper whipping her best friend Gale. Gale had been caught at Cray's house with a wild turkey kill, but Cray had mysteriously disappeared. Gale was strung up and whipped. Peacekeeper Darius tried to stop the punishment after twenty lashes, but Thread knocked him out. It was explained to Kat that Gale had passed out after thirty lashes, but Thread had completed forty in total before Katniss threw herself in between Gale and Thread. Thread hit her across the face with the whip when she intervened. Gale was taken to Katniss' mom for treatment. We later learned that poor Darius had been turned into an Avox.

Johanna enters the elevator and complains that her stylist is an idiot, then says she should have had Cinna make her costume. To get a rise out of Katniss on her way to her floor Johanna does a striptease, and when the elevator arrives at level 7 she walks out of the elevator buck naked. Johanna always gets on Katniss's nerves, but she is fun to work with since she is a member of the alliance to bring down Snow. Johanna works in a paper plant in District 7 and is the daughter of a logger. She is skilled with axes and knives and has a whole collection of tomahawks, which she is not afraid to use on the Careers.

Darius was originally a peacekeeper in District 12, one of the nicer peacekeepers. He would even buy some meat that Katniss sold at the Hob-meat, that she killed by illegally hunting in the woods. He was captured by the Capitol and was made an Avox, one of the traitors of Panem who had their tongues cut out. Katniss figured that the reason Darius was in their suite was to unhinge Katniss, increasing the chances that Katniss would not survive the Hunger Games. Since Katniss was a symbol for the uprisings in Panem, the Capitol wanted her dead.

In "Catching Fire" Katniss asks Peeta "Peeta, how does it come that I never notice it when you have a nightmare?" He says that he doesn't scream or anything like it, he just wakes up paralyzed by fear. When Katniss says that he needs to wake her up when it happens he answers "Not necessary. In most of my nightmares I'm afraid to lose you, so when I wake up and see you, it's okay."

Just before the unveiling of the twist in the third Quarter Quell, Katniss and Prim discover that their mother used to be friends with a girl named Maysilee Donner, who competed in the second Quarter Quell, along with Haymitch. After teaming up with Haymitch in the Games, she was eventually killed by candy-pink birds skewering her neck, and Katniss' mother inherited her canary after she died. Maysilee Donner, being Madge Undersee's aunt, was the last owner of the Mockingjay pin before Katniss.

They discovered that the footage the Capitol first shot to show the destroyed District 13 had a mockingjay wing flutter in the corner of the screen. All the other footage the Capitol "shot" in District 13 also had the same mockingjay wing with different reports and reporters, meaning the Capitol never went back to District 13.

Katniss never experiences the Blood Rain herself and, as she is the narrator of the story, we never know first-hand what it feels like during the raining of blood, apart from the way Johanna describes it as 'thick, hot blood'. But Katniss sees the aftermath of it on Johannah, Beetee and Wiress. They get covered head to toe in the solid brick-red blood. Katniss describes them as looking like 'they've been dipped in paint and left out to dry'.
