Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Bond's dossier, what does 'Le Chiffre' translate to?

Answer: Cypher

James Bond has been assigned to a new case in France. Accumulating a large sum of money from London, and setting up contacts in Jamaica, Bond began to create a cover so that he could bring down a mysterious man named Le Chiffre, the paymaster of the 'Syndicat des Ouvriers d'Alsace'. The man opened and made use of his own brothels before these were closed down and he got into finances and became affiliated with SMERSH, a Russian organization initially dedicated to the forceful removal of spies in the USSR. Theorists say that SMERSH was responsible for numerous assassinations of famous Russians, and only one double agent has been questioned before he killed himself with a cyanide pill. It is up to the alliance to eliminate members of this organization.

To prevent the start of a large war, Bond has been assigned to defeat Le Chiffre, who has taken to the casino to make up the funds needed to fuel this war. If Bond defeats Le Chiffre (known for his notorious luck) at the baccarat table, then odds are, this will result in the death of Le Chiffre as well, who, like Bond, is being closely watched by SMERSH operatives.
2. What is the surname of the couple residing directly above Bond in the hotel?

Answer: Muntz

Bond arrives in the town of Royale-les-eaux shortly after being assigned to the case and he gains his funds from his boss, M. He is initially sent out with 10 mille francs, but realizing that more would be needed (with Le Chiffre's goal of 50 mille francs), he decided to later set out for the casino to raise his pot. Arriving at his hotel, Bond runs into one of his partners in this mission, Mathis, who tells him that the people residing above him, 'The Muntzes', are spies, and that there are tracking bugs all throughout the room. He notes that if Bond turns on the radio, it will block out any communications to the Muntzes. Mathis also notes that he will be in the company of another MI6 operative, and the paymaster for the mission, but she will be introduced a bit later. As well, there is an American operative, by the name of Felix Leiter, who has been stationed in Fontainebleau who may be of assistance if the need arises.

Following their conversation, Mathis treats Bond to lunch with the lovely Vesper Lynd, who Bond quickly takes a liking to. Both of them open up about the mission and find that they're in good hands. As Bond departs, he walks back to his hotel, but off to the side of the road he spots two men in dark suits in straw hats holding briefcases. As he makes his way down the road, one of the briefcases is thrown, and Bond hides as a large explosion erupts in front of him.
3. What does Bond name his personal martini?

Answer: The Vesper

Hiding behind the tree, Bond is able to avoid the most of the explosion, but the explosion kills both of the men in the straw hats, one who carried a red case, and one who carried a blue case. Mathis rushes to help Bond and they proceed to Bond's hotel room. Later that night, feeling a bit better after the situation, Bond proceeds to the casino and meets Felix Leiter, the American partner, as he plays a game of roulette with Vesper Lynd. Leiter shows his finesse and knowledge of this game of luck before Bond goes to dinner with the beautiful Vesper, who is now dressed in a simple 'au couture' black dress.

At this time, Bond, who compliments the meaning behind Vesper's first name, finally creates a name for his personal martini; the Vesper Martini. Bond tells her to order anything she wants in celebration while they have the money and she orders the caviar while Bond takes his choice of champagne.

They toast to the evening and to Lady Luck and eat their dinner amidst their conversation.
4. During Bond's baccarat game, Le Chiffre was the banker.

Answer: True

Before Bond heads to the table, Vesper informs him about the bombing situation that occurred earlier. The two cases held by the two bombers were identical. The men, Bulgarians, had been hired to take out Bond before the tournament, and they were given the red and blue cases to do it. They were initially told that one case would cause a smoke distraction while the other would be a bomb, but it turned out that they had been betrayed, and when they set one of the bombs off before throwing one at Bond, they paid the price. A third hitman was later connected to the crime, and was found driving a Citroen into Paris, but he was stopped at a road block, questioned, and taken to jail. No further information was gained from him.

Shortly after, Bond and Vesper parted ways; Vesper taking Felix's arm onto the balcony, and Bond taking a seat at the baccarat table. It was only a matter of time before the table filled up with wealthy players and Le Chiffre took his seat as the banker. Soon after, the bank reached a modest $2,000,000 before Bond played his first round.
5. Who bails Bond out of the baccarat game, providing him with extra funds?

Answer: Felix

Bond began on a losing streak, and although he began with a hefty purse of sixteen million, he lost all of his initial cash in a few rounds of baccarat, causing Le Chiffre to near his proposed total. When all looked to be lost, Bond was handed a large manila envelope containing another thirty-two million dollars with a note from Felix, saying that the money is backing from the United States in order to beat Le Chiffre.

As the next round began with Bond back at the table, a man with a cane snuck up behind Bond, warning him that his cane contained a gun that he would use to kill Bond if he didn't step away from the table. Thinking quickly, Bond fell backwards over the chair, knocking the man down and pushing the cane across the room. While Bond claimed it was a dizzy spell brought on by the high stakes, the perpetrator ran away, and Bond handed the cane off to Felix.
The game recommenced, and Bond was able to defeat Le Chiffre's hand, 9 to 8. For Le Chiffre's remaining ten million, Bond won once again with baccarat, thus cleaning Le Chiffre out.
After cashing in his winnings, Bond receiveed a cheque and celebrated with Felix before returning to his room to hide the slip. He received a call from Vesper, who also wanted to celebrate, and he met her at the bar.
6. What type of car does Bond use to chase Vesper's abductors?

Answer: Bentley

Bond and Vesper headed down to the bar for a drink in the wake of Bond's victory at the baccarat table, but the victory was short-lived. Vesper was called away by a concierge who stated that Mathis had information about the man with the cane and she stepped out to take it. Bond soon realized how unlike Mathis this would be and went to the lobby to find that she had been abducted by Le Chiffre's men.

Hopping into his Bentley, Bond chased the car down the highway and nearly came up to it near a cliffside. However, Le Chiffre and his men exited the car and popped open the trunk. The larger of the men threw a carpet of spikes into the road, and unfortunately, Bond didn't see it until it was too late. Running over the spikes and attempting to swerve out of the way, Bond's car flipped over, knocking him unconscious.
7. Does Bond kill Le Chiffre?

Answer: No

After Bond crashed, he was pulled from the wreckage by Le Chiffre's goons and placed into the car next to Vesper, who was also unable to move. Le Chiffre took his car to a seaside villa where the guards pulled the hostages from the vehicle and brought them inside. Bond used the last of his strength to try and escape, but he was unable to, and Le Chiffre has his guards pulled up a chair for Bond.

The chair was an odd one though- he had them pull up a small cane chair, cut out the seat, and tie Bond to the legs.

As Bond struggled in the seat, Le Chiffre proceeded to torture Bond, constantly forcing him to black out. Bond didn't give away any info though, and he continued to bear the punishment until another person walked into the room. This person stated that they had been hired by SMERSH to eliminate Le Chiffre for his failure in the matters.

He then killed Bond's enemy, leaving him in the room, before letting Bond know that he wasn't around to kill him, so he would let him be. The man left the room and Bond behind and the sun rose.
8. It was later determined after Bond was saved that the man who spared his life from torture was hired by which nation?

Answer: Soviet Union

After the incident at the seaside beach house, Bond was discovered by Mathis, who was on the trail shortly after Bond's wrecked car was discovered on the roadside. Bond wakes up in a rest home in Royale shortly after the incident, and he is ordered not to strain himself by leaving the bed that he is confined to. Bond tells the story to Mathis and answers any concerns that he may have, including where he hid the cheque of money containing his winnings. He reveals that he unscrewed the number plate from the door of his hotel room and placed it behind the metal in the hall.

Mathis later retrieves the cheque, getting Bond to sign the money back over to the agency. During this, Bond notes that the marking left on his hand by the man who murdered Le Chiffre is in the shape of a M with a small stroke to the top to denote a Russian character for 'sh'. He hypothesizes that this was to denote his status as a 'shpion', Russian for 'spy'. Bond considers resigning from the secret service, but Mathis tells him that there's evil in the world and that Bond needs to fight for good to save everyone else.
9. While vacationing on the coast, Vesper and Bond frequently run into a man with what distinguishing accessory?

Answer: Eyepatch

Bond has Vesper visit after his decision, and he finds that she blames herself for all of the goings-on that got Bond into the mess he did. Bond reassures her that everything's okay and she continues to come back to his room, day after day, with stories of what she has done over the weeks. Bond quickly gets better after the visits, and the two decide to go to an inn on the coast for the weekend. On the drive to said inn, Vesper constantly looks over her shoulder, feeling that she is being followed. It isn't long before an odd car does begin following them, and they hide along the side of the road until he passes by.

When they arrive at their destination, they set up in two adjacent rooms (connected by a common washroom). Bond realizes that he wants to be with Vesper, and takes a walk down the beach to clear his thoughts.
10. Vesper is killed by SMERSH operatives.

Answer: False

During dinner on their first night, both of them are sexually tense, and Bond quickly takes Vesper back to her room to spend the night. The following morning, Bond wakes up early and goes for a quick swim, realizing that he loves Vesper and that he wants to propose to her. However, things begin to take a turn in the other direction when Bond spots Vesper making a phone call. She claims it's to Mathis at an Elyssés number, however Bond later discovers from the concierge that the number was from Invalides, and that Vesper had been lying.

Bond and Vesper soon spot the man that drove past them on the highway, only a couple days later. Vesper quickly runs back to her room and stares out the window until Bond arrives. Bond is concerned about her behavior and tells her that she needs to snap out of it as he was planning to propose to her. Vesper decides to lighten up, forget about the troubles, and have a good time.
The next day, Bond is awakened by the concierge, who tells Bond that there has been an accident. Bond quickly goes to Vesper's room and discovers her dead in her bed, overdosed on sleeping pills. The concierge gives Bond a note explaining everything. Vesper was a double agent, working for a small group of Soviet spies whose information was relayed to SMERSH. She was responsible for giving away information about Bond, and she was to make sure that no one stood behind Bond at the baccarat game, to give the shooter a clear shot. After the game went against their plans, Vesper was involved in the kidnapping. Later, SMERSH came after her. Despite this, she says, she loved Bond, and would have married him.

Bond is shocked by this, and he quickly calls to London to tell them that Vesper was a double agent, and that she is now dead. Bond decides to take revenge on SMERSH, and remains a secret agent, so that he can rightfully bring down the world's evil.
