Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who said: 'They're shooting at everyone... They're trying to kill everyone."?

Answer: Clevinger

Clevinger finds it difficult to understand Yossarian's claim that just because the enemy planes are shooting at everyone doesn't mean they aren't trying to kill him.
2. In Chapter 3 which character's pep talk begins: 'You're American officers. The officers of no other army in the world can make that statement. Think about it.'

Answer: Colonel Cargill

This type of satirical humour directed at the ineptitute of officers is frequently used in 'Catch 22'.
3. Which character is Doc Daneeka talking to when he says: 'Sure there's a catch...Catch 22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn't really crazy.'?

Answer: Yossarian

The concept of 'Catch 22' is firmly rooted in our vocabulary, and frequently appears in stories, songs, speeches and dictionaries, despite being a fictional clause.
4. Which character's pick up line is: 'Me big photographer from Life magazine. Big picture on big heap cover.'?

Answer: Hungry Joe

Hungry Joe actually was a photographer for Life magazine before he joined the army.
5. Who is Yossarian talking to when he says: 'You won't marry me because I'm crazy, and you say I'm crazy because I want to marry you?'?

Answer: Luciana

Luciana's paradoxical claim for not marrying Yossarian is based around the idea of 'Catch 22' - an inescapable, illogical clause that Yossarian simply can't win at.
6. Who weeps over the intercom: 'Help him... help the bombardier'?

Answer: Dobbs

This line is repeated randomly and often throughout the novel, as Heller builds up the tension on the run up to the description of Snowden's death.
7. Who has 'a sure-fire plan for cheating the federal government out of six thousand dollars.'

Answer: Milo Minderbinder

Milo not only cheats the federal government out of money but most of his friends as well.
8. Which patriotic individual claims that 'the American fighting man is second to none.'?

Answer: Nately

By the end of the chapter (Chapter 23), Nately has been convinced by the old man in Rome that it doesn't matter how good a country's fighting men are, they will probably be more prosperous if they lose the war than if they win it.
9. Who warns Yossarian that: 'they're going to disappear Dunbar'?

Answer: Nurse Duckett

The process of 'disappearing' someone is never explained to us in the novel, so for all we know Dunbar may still be alive at the end.
10. Which newspaper said that 'Catch 22': 'gasps for want of craft and sensibility'?

Answer: the Sunday Times

Joseph Heller didn't seem too bothered about the unfavourable reviews of the novel as he said he is 'tempted to drown in laughter as I jot this down'.
