Rosalie Hale is one of Edward's "sisters." She is in love with Emmett, one of Edward's "brothers" and they have gotten married quite a few times over their lifetime. In "Twilight," they both pretend to be seniors along with Jasper. Edward and Alice, however, pretend to be juniors; that is how he ends up in Bella's Biology class.

Jacob Black is a few years younger than Bella. His father, Billy, is one of Bella's father, Charlie's, good friends. Jacob visits Bella's house twice in this book with his father. When Bella makes a trip down to La Push with some friends from her school, she tricks Jacob into telling her about the myths that surround the Cullens.

It is from Jacob that Bella first discovers that Edward is a vampire.

Jessica is in Bella's grade at Forks High School. She befriends Bella but becomes jealous when her crush, Mike, has feelings for her new friend. Nonetheless, she keeps her jealousy hidden and is ecsatic when Bella turns down Mike. He then asks Jessica out on Bella's insistance.

Laurent joined James' coven because James is incredibly smart and lethal. He holds no enmity towards the Cullens but refuses to go against James. When James decides to hunt Bella, he leaves for the northern settlement of Denali. He makes a reappearance, however, in the next book.

Alice Cullen is another of Edward's "sisters." When she sees the future, it is very subjective. The future can change at any time. She can only see what a person has decided to do and how it plays out. However, once a person changes their mind, the future changes and Alice has a new vision according to the new decision a person has made.

Vampires are immortal. Unless another vampire, or a werewolf as we find out in the next book, kills them, they can live for many millenia and they do not age. They all start out as humans, though. Whatever age they are changed at is the age they will remain for the rest of their existence. Because of this, they are not blood-related, with the exception of the Volturi in Italy. So Esme is not Edward's biological mother.

She is older than Edward in age, but he was changed many years before she was.

Jasper is in love with Alice. He has the gift of being able to control emotions of others in a room. For instance, if there was a feeling of tension in a room, Jasper could use his talent to ease the tension and make everyone more relaxed. His gift comes in handy especially when the Cullens first meet James' pack and there is some awkwardness because the Cullens are "vegetarians" whereas James' pack actively hunts humans.

Answer: Carlisle

Carlisle Cullen is the oldest of the family. In "Twilight" he was over three hundred years old. He made Edward, Esme, Rosalie and Emmett. In the book, it says that Rosalie carried Emmett many miles after she found him bleeding, which suggests she didn't change him; she took him to Carlisle, probably because she didn't know exactly how to do it. Jasper and Alice were both changed by other vampires.

Emmett is huge. He has big muscles and uses them to their fullest potential. He is always up for a fight and is excited when he gets the oppurtunity to fight James, who has threatened both Bella and Edward.

Answer: Phil

Bella's mother remarried a baseball player, Phil. He travels frequently, which is one of the reasons Bella chose to move to Forks to live with her father. It is not told whether Bella is fond of Phil or not. It appears she is neutral when it comes to her stepfather.
