Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does the news of his brother's arrest reach Lord Peter at the start of the novel?

Answer: Paris

The Hotel Meurice in Paris, to be precise. He had been to Corsica on the advice of a doctor at the end of his previous case.
2. In which county was Riddlesdale situated?

Answer: North Riding of Yorkshire

The lodge at Riddlesdale had been taken for the shooting season by the Duke of Denver.
3. What was the name of the victim?

Answer: Denis Cathcart

The body was that of Denis Cathcart, man about town, engaged to Lady Mary Wimsey. Freddie Arbuthnot, unlikely financial whizz kid, was staying with the party, while George Goyles was a brief visitor to the lodge. Zedekiah Bone sometimes drank with the unpleasant Mr Grimethorpe.
4. Where was the body discovered?

Answer: by the conservatory door

Lord Peter nearly impaled himself on the railings, as he traced the steps of the mysterious Gent's No. 10. A body was found in the bath in the first Lord Peter story, "Whose Body", and another of his investigations started with the discovery of the rigid body of an old soldier in an armchair at the Bellona Club.
5. What was the correct reason for Peter's brother, the Duke of Denver, refusing to say where he had been on the night of the murder?

Answer: he had been with another woman

Gerald, Duke of Denver, was chivalrous enough to risk being tried for murder, rather than risk letting Mrs Grimethorpe's name be dragged into public. There had been a political meeting in Northallerton, but it was Mr Goyles who had attended.
6. What information had the Duke received in the post on the evening of the murder?

Answer: Cathcart cheated at cards

The Duke felt that he had to challenge Cathcart with this allegation from an old and trusted friend. He was astounded that Cathcart appeared not to care about the revelation, and even more upset when Cathart announced that his engagement to Lady Mary was off.
7. What small item was found in the thicket where the shooting took place?

Answer: a diamond cat with emerald eyes

Nobody had seen the cat before: it was a private talisman belonging to Cathcart: a gift from his mistress "pour porter bonheur" (to bring luck).
8. What of these near disasters did NOT befall Lord Peter during his investigations?

Answer: His plane crashed into the sea

The plane piloted across the Atlantic by Air Pilot Grant to bring Lord Peter (and the last piece of evidence) from the USA, NEARLY crashed into the sea. "We came as quick as we could, but we had to come down near Whitehaven with engine trouble, and if we had come down half a mile sooner I shouldn't be here now".
9. Where was the letter from Tommy Freeborn found?

Answer: Wedged in the sash of a rattling window

The other letter, written by Cathcart to his faithless mistress, was found in her jewellery box. However, Tommy Freeborn's letter which proved where the Duke had spent the night, was carelessly wedged into the window of the farmhouse at Grider's Hole, to allay the fears of Mrs Grimethorpe that her husband was returning....
10. What was it that Lord Peter found in the large oak chest on the landing?

Answer: Silver sand from the conservatory

The sheets and counterpanes were in the oak chest, but there was also silver sand, as Lady Mary had hastily stowed a suitcase in the chest after discovering Cathcart's body, to hide the fact that she was planning to elope that night. Her skirt had been stained with Cathcart's blood, but she tried to hide that in her room.
