Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Connie Willis' first published novel?

Answer: Lincoln's Dream

Mrs Willis won the John W. Campbell Award for this, her first novel. "Water Witch" was co-authored with Cynthia Felice.
2. Although Connie Willis has not written a series of books as is common in SF writing, she has revisited Mr Dunworthy and the Time Travel Lab at Cambridge University. Which of these are the two novels and one short story involved?

Answer: "Doomsday Book", "To Say Nothing of the Dog" and "Fire Watch".

These stories all revolve around the Time Travel Lab, however their only common characters beyond brief reference are the staff. These tales are all independent and explore different characters and settings.
3. The novel "Doomsday Book" by Connie Willis, is about: A historian travelling back to the...

Answer: fourteenth century and the Black Death.

Kivrin ,the main character, was meant to go through to 1320 to check out mediaeval history first hand. However she was accidentally sent to 1348, and experienced life during the outbreak of the Black Death.
4. "To Say Nothing of the Dog" by Connie Willis, is a book rich in literary allusions and references. Which one of these authors is NOT alluded or referred to in this novel?

Answer: Jane Austen

"Three Men in a Boat" by Jerome K. Jerome is heavily referenced in this novel, especially in Ned and Terrance's travels down the Thames, and is incidentally an excellent read in and of itself. The title "To Say Nothing of the Dog" is in fact a direct reference to Montmorency who was in the boat along with the three men. Ned and Verity are referred and refer to each other as Lord Peter and Harriet characters from Dorothy Sayers' writings. Charles Dodgson is of course Lewis Carroll, author, of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." There are direct quotes at the start of some chapters, discussions about the Rev. Dodgson and references to a variety of characters.
5. In "Passage" by Connie Willis, Dr. Joanna Lander has regular movie nights with a colleague Vielle. There are four rules to 'Dish Night'. The fourth rule is; "no movies with Sylvester Stallone, no Woody Allan movies and no...". What is the third thing not allowed?

Answer: Titanic

This is ironic as Joanna's NDE's involve the Titanic.
6. What is the fad that Sandra Foster is focusing on - at least initially - in the novel "Bellwether" by Connie Willis?

Answer: hair bobbing

Sandra is investigating hair bobbing as a case study into the origin and propagation of fads. To tell more would be to spoil one of my favourite books.
7. The short story "Even the Queen" by Connie Willis, refers to a bodily function the queen performs the same as the rest of us. What is that function?

Answer: menstruation

This story is about a world where women no longer have periods. A young lady is going to have her 'shunt' removed and resume menstruation. Read the story to find out if she goes through with it; it is one of her best stories.
8. The short story "Daisy, in the Sun" by Connie Willis is about a flower in a post-holocaust world.

Answer: False

It is about a girl called Daisy and her own personal struggles in that world.
9. What, in the short story "Blued Moon", is Ulric Henry hired to do?

Answer: marry Sally

Ulric Henry is indeed hired to marry the boss' daughter and be Vice President in charge of saying what you mean. In amongst all the other interesting themes of this story is an exploration of middle managmentese.
10. Finally a question about Connie Willis' awards record. Which of these is she the first author to win?

Answer: Both

Connie Willis herself says: "I'm so proud of the fact that I was the first person to win in all four categories of the Nebula and in all four writing categories of the Hugo. That's like the different kinds of baseball records -- this one can't be broken."
