Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the book, what did the curator do to raise the alarm while he was being attacked?

Answer: Pulled a painting off the wall

The Louvre has an intricate alarm system: if a painting is pulled off the wall or hit hard enough, the wires behind it will activate the alarm system, and a metal gate will shut at the exits to stop the burglar escaping.
2. As Jacques Sauniere was dying, he used his last strength to leave clues for his granddaughter. What message did he leave her?

Answer: Find Robert Langdon

Jacques's granddaughter Sophie was a cryptographer, so he knew she would be called to try and work out his message. At the end of the message he wrote "PS. Find Robert Langdon". The PS stood for Princess Sophie, which Sophie was told were her secret initials. The proper meaning of the letters PS was 'The Priory of Sion'.
3. What symbol did Jacques Sauniere put on himself?

Answer: Pentacle

The pentacle has been made out in recent times to be a devil worship symbol, but it actually stood for nature worship. People who worshipped Mother Nature used this symbol.
4. Which painting was originally rejected by the nuns?

Answer: Madonna of the Rocks

The painting "Madonna of the Rocks" was rejected because it had messages in it that went against the church's beliefs. Da Vinci then redid the painting to the nuns' satisfaction. It was repainted and renamed 'Virgin of the Rocks'.
5. Where did Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu put the tracking dot that was in Robert's pocket?

Answer: In a bar of soap

The small tracking dot was accurate within two feet anywhere in the world. It was used to keep a tab on Robert Langdon, as he was the main suspect for the murder of Jacques Sauniere, the Louvre curator. They put the tracking dot into a bar of soap and threw it into the back of a truck.
6. The "Mona Lisa's" name could have come from the God and Goddess of Fertility in which language (according to the book)?

Answer: Egyptian

The God of Fertility in Egyptian is Amon, and the Goddess is L'isa. Together they make Amon Lisa, or Mona Lisa.
7. What number, PHI, is known as the building block of life?

Answer: 1.618

PHI can be found in nearly everything in nature and in the human body, such as your body height divided by height from your waist to the ground.
8. What does the name Fleur-de-lis mean, according to this book?

Answer: The flower of Lisa

The fleur-de-lis, or lily flower, has long been a symbol of royalty, and associated both with the Virgin Mary and the Trinity. According to "The Da Vinci Code", the Fleur-de-lis was the flower of the Priory of Sion, and also had something to do with the "Mona Lisa"; Da Vinci was reputedly a leader of the Priory.
9. Which of these can the name Leonardo Da Vinci NOT spell?

Answer: An old, arid vince

The words 'O, Draconian Devil' were used in the book as a clue that Jacques Sauniere left Sophie to tell them to look for Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings.

"An old, and vince" only has 13 letters - it is missing an "o".
10. What was the code used to open Jacques secret bank vault?

Answer: 1123581321

The code looked completely random, but it was not so. It was just the Fibonacci Sequence melded together in one 10 digit number, so Jacques could easily remember it.
11. What was the word used to open the SECOND cryptex?

Answer: APPLE

Leonardo Da Vinci invented the cryptex, a device which allows secret documents to stay safe unless someone puts in the right code. If they try to break it, a thin inside layer of vinegar will pour into the main space and dissolve the parchment.
12. What was interesting about the way Leonardo Da Vinci wrote?

Answer: It was all in mirror writing

The supposed reason for this was that he didn't want people to get his ideas, but this cannot be proven. Another possible theory is that because he was left handed, it was easier for him to not smudge his writing. Da Vinci invented many things that weren't created until many years later, such as the helicopter.
13. When was the Priory of Sion formed?

Answer: 1099

The Priory keeps the Sangreal documents and holds the unreleased parts of the bible. Many famous people have been Grand Masters of the Priory including Sir Isaac Newton and Leonardo Da Vinci.
14. The Grand Master of the Priory and his three accomplices were the only ones that knew where the Holy Grail was. What was the name of the accomplices, as a group?

Answer: Senechaux

The Grand Master and his three Senechaux are the only people who are allowed to know the biggest secrets and the location of the most important documents. If the Grand Master dies, one of the Senechaux takes his place. If one of the Senechaux dies or is promoted to Grand Master, he is replaced by someone from the Priory.
15. Who did Da Vinci supposedly paint in "The Last Supper" that was not one of the disciples?

Answer: Mary Magdelene

According to "The Da Vinci Code", In "The Last Supper", Da Vinci put Mary in the painting, leaning away from the person next to her. With the two bodies leaning away from each other, the space in between them created a chalice shape, the female symbol. A lot of Da Vinci's other work also had symbolism hidden in it.
