Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the casting process, which one of these actors did Emma Thompson say were immediately their characters?

Answer: Elizabeth Spriggs (Mrs Jennings)

She says it was difficult to imagine anyone else in her role after seeing her, and the same went for Gemma Jones (Mrs Dashwood) and Kate Winslet (Marianne). Other roles, she said, were more elusive, like Lucy Steele and Willoughby, "perhaps because of (the character's) hidden motives."
2. One of the first characters they try to cast is Fanny Ferrars Dashwood. After seeing many actresses who were extremely good, the director Ang Lee says - ?

Answer: This is a nation of Fannys!

Actress Harriet Walter eventually got the role, who I think was fantastic.
3. During the rehearsal process, director Ang Lee set the cast homework - tasks which involved character studies and their "inner life". Who wins the prize for best effort, in the form of her letter to Elinor?

Answer: Imogen Stubbs (Lucy Steele)

Imogen Stubbs writes a brilliant and hilarious letter from Lucy to Elinor a few years after the book has ended. The full letter is printed in the back of the diaries, and includes this fabulous paragraph: "Dearest Elinor - I gather you pine for children, and in this area there may be problems. Fear not, I do sincerely believe, one can glean as much joy from a pet dog or a garden. Have you tried fennel? Enjoy what life remains to you both, unencumbered by the patter of tiny feet."
4. During the filming of the scene where Edward (Hugh Grant) walks into the front room to find Elinor and Lucy together, after several takes director Ang Lee says to Hugh "Now do it like a bad actor." How does Hugh reply?

Answer: That was the one I just did

Ang Lee seemed to give many such notes to the actors, including to Greg Wise: "Great acting. I think"; Emma Thompson: "Don't look so old"; Kate Winslet: "You'll get better"; and Alan Rickman: "More subtle; do more."
5. As writer of the screenplay for the film, Emma Thompson often found herself having to defend lines she had put in the script. What refrain was she often heard saying?

Answer: It's in the book!

One example of this was when Hugh Laurie thought that the line "Don't palm all your abuses" was too rude. "It's in the book!" Emma explained for about the millionth time.
6. Emma said that she was "appalled to find that Emilie Francois (Margaret Dashwood and only 12 years old) was keen to 'lose a few kilos' ". Emma reacted by "snorting a lot" and forcing what down her?

Answer: a Jaffa cake

She says "Does all that horror really start so young nowadays?" Personally, I'd be hard put to stop at the one Jaffa Cake..."
7. Who fainted on set due to filming in cold, soaking conditions?

Answer: Kate Winslet

According to the diaries, during filming Kate also got phlebitis in her leg, and also slipped on the stairs and hurt her wrist. On the occasion of her fainting she was warmed up in front of a fire with her feet in Greg Wise's armpits. So it wasn't all bad then...
8. As her diaries are obviously written in diary form, what did Emma's shortest day say?

Answer: Watched 'Blind Date' and picked my feet.

That was the diary entry for Sunday 18 June. Lovely.
9. While filming outdoors one day, a tourist walked by and saw Alan Rickman (Colonel Brandon) and said "Oh look, there's....?" Who did they think he was?

Answer: Tom Cruise

I love Alan Rickman, and to be honest I don't have great eyesight, but I really don't think Tom Cruise would have been the first person to come into my head if I'd have seen him.
10. One day during filming, someone offered Gemma Jones a bun. How did she respond?

Answer: I'd like a bun almost as much as I'd like a man

Well who wouldn't?
11. Alan Rickman (Colonel Brandon) filmed his last scene first.

Answer: True

His last scene was the wedding scene, and he shot it on his first day of filming. "'You try it' he said darkly. 'I haven't played a scene yet and I'm already married and being followed about by you lot...'".
12. One of days they were filming with horses, Emma Thompson writes: "The horses have taken to letting off lengthy and noisome farts during the takes. Debbie says it's the Devon oats. Privately I decide to ....?" What does Emma vow?

Answer: lay off the porridge

Emma Thompson had made several references earlier in the diaries about her love of porridge with a bit of jam.
13. One day whilst filming, Emma Thompson received the terrible news that actor Christopher Reeve had been badly injured in a riding accident.

Answer: True

Emma Thompson worked with Christopher Reeve on 'The Remains of the Day.' I adored Christopher Reeve from his 'Superman' films and was terribly sad when he died. Emma referred to it as a "Black, black day".
14. On a happier note, while filming a scene with the Palmer's and their baby, what problem did they encounter?

Answer: The baby wouldn't cry

Emma said "We've hired the calmest babies in the world to play the hysterical Thomas". "Babies smiled all afternoon. Buddhist babies. They didn't cry once. We, however, were all in tears by 5pm."
15. After the very last scene had been filmed, Emma writes "Then we ate hamburgers and rubbery chips and drank champagne and there was much love around." What was her final diary entry for that particular day?

Answer: All within Elinor's breast was strong, silent satisfaction

It's in the book.
