Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In C.S. Lewis's book, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", the land of Narnia was enduring an endless winter. Who was responsible for this?

Answer: The White Witch

The White Witch had cast a spell on Narnia, and it had been winter for a hundred years. Trufflehunter was a friendly badger in "Prince Caspian". The Hag was a minor, but nasty, character in the same book. Rilian was the prince in "The Silver Chair".
2. Consider the TV series "Dr Who". To date, the Doctor in this series has been played by seven actors. (Not counting occasional very brief appearances by other actors who played alternative or masquerading Doctors. Also not counting the Valeyard.) Who was not one of them?

Answer: Paul McGann

Paul McGann played the Doctor in a movie, which was not actually part of the TV series. William Hartnell was the First Doctor, Tom Baker the Fourth, and Colin Baker the Sixth.
3. Did Lewis Carroll's character, Alice, have any brothers or sisters?

Answer: Yes

There were two books about Alice. One, usually known as "Alice in Wonderland" or simply as "Alice" was actually titled "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", and the one usually known as "Alice Through the Looking Glass" which was actually titled "Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There".

In the first book, Alice's sister was reading a dull book without pictures or conversation. So Alice had at least one sister.
4. In which of the "Chronicals of Narnia" books does Polly Plummer actually appear?

Answer: "The Magician's Nephew" and "The Last Battle"

There are seven books in the series. The numbering is a bit difficult because the first book written happened after one of the others in time, while one of the other books happened during the first one written. The chronological order is "The Magician's Nephew" (in which Narnia is created, and in which Polly plays a major part), "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", (which introduces the High King Peter and his siblings, and in which Diggory Kirke appears as an elderly man), "The Horse and His Boy", (which takes place during "Lion", and which is set wholly in Narnia), "Prince Caspian", (which introduces Caspian,), "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" (which takes place just a few Narnian years later,), "The Silver Chair", (in which Caspian is very aged, and which introduces his son, Rilian), and "The Last Battle", (in which Narnia is destroyed, and in which Polly appears at the end).
5. Diana Wynne Jones has written many fantasy novels. One of her best-known characters is known as "Chrestomanci". What kind of name is this?

Answer: It's a role name, like President or Mayor.

Chrestomanci is a role name, belonging to the highest nine-lifed enchanter, who is in charge of keeping other magic-users under control. The Chrestomanci we get to know best in the books was originally named Christopher Chant.
6. In J.K. Rowling's books about Harry Potter, what is the name of Harry's father?

Answer: James

Harry's deceased father was called James, and his mother was Lily.
7. In the book "Logan's Run", by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, how old is Logan?

Answer: 21

Logan is 21, and he "runs" (escapes) rather than hand himself over, as is the law, to be killed. In the movie version the age was higher, but it was 21 in the book.
8. In the TV series "Charmed", there are four sisters, whose names all begin with P. One is a half-sister to the others. Which one is she?

Answer: Paige

Paige is the half-sister, introduced after Prue's death to bring the number of Charmed Ones to three again.
9. Lessa is the major character of two of Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" books. Who is Lessa's dragon?

Answer: Ramoth

Ramoth is Lessa's golden queen dragon. Ruth is a little white dragon, Path a green one and Beauty is a fire lizard. All three appear elsewhere in the series.
10. In Anne McCaffrey's "Crystal Singer" trilogy, the main character is called -

Answer: Killashandra Ree

Killashandra Ree is the splendidly resounding name of the Crystal Singer. To date, she has appeared in three books. Kris Bjornsen is the heroine of the "Catani" series, Menolly is from the "Dragonriders of Pern" series and Maree Mallory is from "Deep Secret", by a different author.
11. What do the following characters from fantasy all have in common? Killashandra Ree, Menolly, The Blue Adept, Jamie McCrimmon, ShuMar of Loakencamp, Sebell, Masterharper Robinton, Stile.

Answer: They are all musical

All the characters are musical. Killashandra is a crystal singer, and was originally studying opera, Menolly, Sebell and Robinton are all harpers, The Blue Adept and Stile both play musical instruments and use singing magic, Jamie is a piper, and ShuMar sings and plays pipes.

They are not all male, only four of them are from Anne McCaffrey's books and most appear in more than one book (even Jamie pops up in novelised versions of "Dr Who").
12. Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series begins with the adventures of two main characters. What are their names?

Answer: Claire and Jamie

At the beginning of the series, Claire Randall meets Jamie Fraser in 18th Century Scotland. Claire is a time traveller from the mid 20th Century. She is married to Frank Randall, which makes it very awkward when she has to marry Jamie! She's not exactly a widow, but how can she be married when her husband hasn't been born yet?
13. In Piers Anthony's series "Incarnations of Immortality", which Incarnation did Zane become?

Answer: Thanatos (Death)

Zane becomes the Incarnation of Death by killing the former incumbent. His major appearance in the series is in the book "On a Pale Horse".
14. In Susan Cooper's "The Dark is Rising" sequence, there are several well-drawn characters. One of them is Will Stanton. Which of the following statements about Will is true?

Answer: Will is an Old One

Will is an Old One, although he is only eleven years old. He is one of a large family, and he is not Welsh. (Bran, another major character, is Welsh.) Merriman is the character who is associated with Merlin.
15. In the TV series "Dr Who", who or what was a Dalek?

Answer: A mutated creature that travels in a metal pepperpot-shaped machine.

The Daleks were natives of the planet called Skaro. A nuclear war had mutated them, so a scientist called Davros invented a kind of self-contained wheeled vehicle/shell for the Daleks to inhabit. They look like robots, but there is definitely a Thing inside.
