Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This mathematical term comes from the name of a book written by the great Persian mathematician al-Khwarizmi, and means 'the removal of negative terms in an equation'. To which of these terms am I referring?

Answer: Algebra

The book, published c. 825 AD, is entitled 'Jabr wa-al-Muqabalah' and the term algebra comes from 'al-jabr'. Interestingly, the term algorithm is derived from the name of this famed mathematician (al-Khwarizmi).
2. Which of the following is the 'Floating Maiden' story from the Thai epic poem 'Ramakien'?

Answer: Nang Loi

The 'Ramakien' is the Thai version of the ancient Indian epic called the 'Ramayana'. This national epic was produced in the court of King Rama I, and was used to edify the royal house in that country.
3. What is the more common (and much shorter) name for Thomas Hobbes' work 'The Matter, Form, and Power of a Commonwealth Ecclesiastical and Civil'?

Answer: Leviathan

The 'Leviathan' is a seminal work of political government. Hobbes placed sovereignty firmly in the hands of a king who would rule benevolently, but as an autocrat. His writings were in opposition to Rousseau's ideas, within which man should attain a form of self government.
4. Dafydd ap Gwilym was a major practitioner of what poetry form?

Answer: Cywydd

Try saying that term ten times quickly! Dafydd ap Gwilym was perhaps the greatest Welsh poet, living during the 14th century. He could be considered the Shakespeare of Welsh literature!
5. Milton's 'Paradise Lost', Voltaire's 'Candide' and Carpentier's 'The Lost Steps' were all influenced or based on what legend?

Answer: El Dorado

El Dorado was a kingdom of legend in Latin America, sought after by the Spaniards for its vast quantities of gold. The Spanish conquistadors were never able to get their hands on this gold, however...it very likely never existed. Thank you for making an attempt at this quiz, I hope you enjoyed!
