Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Xavier March's SS rank "Sturmbannfuhrer" the equivilent of?

Answer: Major

It was stated in the first chapter that March's police rank was the same as a major, though it's not a major part of the plot.
2. Who was the first elderly Nazi that March discovered the body of?

Answer: Josef Buhler

As one reads later, all four men attended the infamous 1942 Wannsee Conference. March was assigned to Buhler's body on the shore of the Havel lake and about 24 hours later Buhler's old colleague Stuckart is found shot in his apartment. Martin Luther (yes, that was his real name) has gone into hiding, correctly suspecting he was next on the Gestapo's hit-list. Eichmann, supposedly, died of a heart attack in 1961, the year before he was really executed in Israel.
3. Before the story begins, March had moved into a new apartment. There he discovered a hidden photo of a family who used to live there, but there is no record of what happened to them. What did he eventually learn?

Answer: They were Jews and were "evacuated" east.

Their surname was Weiss but saying that would have given the answer away. When I first read the book I did some internet research about the murdered Buhler, Stuckart and Luther and I suspected this would turn out to be something to do with the Jews because they were at the Wannsee conference. To think, if Germany had won no one would probably know for sure about the holocaust!
4. What was the occupation of Charlotte "Charlie" Macguire who became March's girlfriend?

Answer: Journalist

It is quite a shame Charlie and March could not get to America together, they could have been so happy (sniff, sniff). Then again, March had failed in relationships many times because he really preferred solitude, so maybe not.
5. We get to see Hitler in this story, in person.

Answer: False

Hitler never actually features in this story, except in photos or busts. Pity, I was actually hoping we would get to see a confrontation between March and the worst Nazi of all. But it's probably more realistic that we didn't, since Hitler wouldn't get his "hands dirty" with such state secrets.
6. The United States dropped the atom bomb on Japan on August 6th 1945 before this story begins. True or false?

Answer: FALSE

In fact they did so in 1946, because they were concentrating on winning the war against Germany first and thus had to suspend most of the Japanese operations.
7. What was the name of the firm of Swiss bankers which March and Charlie visit, where Martin Luther had hidden documented proof of the "final solution" of the Jewish question?

Answer: Zaugg and Cie

Herr Zaugg was "like a little doll: silver hair, shiny pink face, tiny hands and feet." Cie is the equivilent of "Co" in Switzerland. 22 years earlier Luther had opened a wartime vault at the bank. Bahnhof Strasse is the bank's street address in Zurich. Nebe and Heydrich are actually high-ranking members of the SS, though I would not put it past them to illegally create a swiss banking firm to earn themselves extra money!
8. Who is the Gestapo General who is involved in the mysterious deaths of Buhler, Stuckart and Luther? The man who works directly for the Reichsfuhrer and, as Artur Nebe says, likes killing people for fun. (Which perhaps explains why few want to be near him.)

Answer: Odilo "Globus" Globocnik

Krebs was actually Globus' adjutant who plays the "soft cop" when the two are interrogating poor captured March. Jost was the SS cadet who unwittingly witnessed Globus dumping Buhler's body in the lake and as such was transferred to the eastern front.

The WW2 head of the Luftwaffe (airforce) Goering actually died of natural causes in 1951 before the story begins. In real life he swalled a cyanide capsule before they could execute him after the Nuremburg trials.
9. When March is searching Buhler's house he sees a photo of Hitler giving Buhler an award, dated May 17th 1945. Why could this photo not exist in real life?

Answer: Hitler died before that date

In Reality: Adolf Hitler shot himself on April 30th 1945, several weeks before that photo was taken in other words. Buhler was captured by the Allies in 1945 but not exected until 1948. Hitler certainly did present awards to his officers and there are so many photos of him it's unlikely that he was camera-shy.
10. March was convinced the American Henry Nightingale was responsible for tipping the Gestapo off about Luther's whereabouts. But who did it turn out really betrayed him?

Answer: Max Jaeger

As March says to Nightingale after Luther is killed, the leak couldn't have come from him or Charlie because they were alone all night. Nightingale mutters bitterly "I'm sure you were." Halder was March's friend in their U-boat during the war and his wife Ilse is only briefly mentioned but never seen. March tells neither of them about Luther.
