For The True "Phantom" Phan Trivia Quiz

Really obscure questions pertaining to Leroux's book, 'The Phantom of the Opera'. No one but a truly obsessed phan like myself would know the answers. Note: none of the questions have to do with the OPERA, they're all about the book.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did La Sorelli place on a table near the stage door for good luck?

Answer: A horseshoe

'Surrounded by all the dancers, and even followed by the whole body of younger pupils in tights, she went to the doorkeeper's vestibule, near the administration courtyard, and put a horseshoe on the table there...I have not invented that horseshoe...and it can still be seen on the table in the vestibule.' (Ch. 1)
2. What does Erik wear if in public, other than the mask?

Answer: A papier-mache nose

'...but Moncharmin says in his memoirs that it was transparent - his exact words are 'His nose was long, thin, and transparent' - and I will add that it may have been a false nose. Moncharmin may have mistaken shininess for transparence.' (Ch. 3)
3. Of what is Erik's mask made?

Answer: black silk

It's not white! It's not white! And I might add, it covers his whole face. I believe the correct term is a 'full domino.'
4. Who is Lachenal?

Answer: The head stableman

He gets really mad at Richard in Ch. 8 because Cesar was stolen and he keeps whipping himself in the thigh with a riding crop. I thought that scene was really funny.
5. Where does Erik want to marry Christine?

Answer: The Madeleine Chapel

I believe this is where Susan Kay got Erik's mother's name. And it's pronounced, coincidentally, in French, Mahd-len. Two syllables.
6. 'Holy angels in Heaven blessed, My spirit longs with thee to rest.' Who wrote the opera this is from?

Answer: Gounod

It's right in the middle of the performance, and Raoul stands up in the audience and sings the first half, Christine sings the second half, and then there's a blackout and she disappears. The line is from the jail scene in 'Faust', where Marguerite asks the Angels to forgive her.
7. What is unusual about Mme. Giry's appearance?

Answer: She is missing several teeth

" 'HAVE ME ARRESTED?' The mouth that said this seemed to spit its three remaining teeth into Richard's face."
8. What is Christine's usual role in 'Faust'?

Answer: Siebel

I find it ironic that she plays someone who remains Marguerite's only friend after the village finds out she's pregnant, whereas she would probably be the first to spit in Carlotta's face if she dared.
9. In which cellar does Erik live?

Answer: 5th

' 'Once, only once, I'd gone down into those prodigious cellars and I'd stopped at the third level, afraid to go any farther. I'd seen two more levels below me, big enough to hold a town...' ' (Ch. 13)
10. What does Erik's hair look like?

Answer: Dark - long and wavy, but bald to the temples

' 'The only hair he has is three or four long, dark locks that hang down over his forehead and behind his ears.' ' (Ch. 1)
11. What does Christine wear to the masquerade ball?

Answer: A black domino

This is an ironic scene where the three main characters trade colors, so to speak: Erik wears red, Christine black, and Raoul white. Christine is wearing black, the Phantom's color, as well as a black domino mask, which Erik wears normally, except here he doesn't wear a mask at all. (Or does he? I suppose it's debatable.)
12. What is the last phrase in the book, including the epilogue?

Answer: 'it is no ordinary skeleton'

'And now, what is going to be done with that skeleton? Surely it will not be buried in a pauper's grave! I maintain that the skeleton of the Opera ghost belongs in the National Academy of Music; it is no ordinary skeleton.' (Epilogue)
13. How tall is Erik?

Answer: As tall as the Daroga

'Erik's height was about the same as mine and I thought he must not have placed the spring beyond his own reach; that was merely a hypothesis, but it was my only hope.' (Ch. 25)
14. How old is Raoul?

Answer: 21

'He was now twenty-one and looked eighteen.' (Ch. 2)
15. Where did Erik learn the Punjab lasso?

Answer: India

'And he found no better way of doing it than to use his Punjab lasso. After a stay in India, he had come back with incredible strength in strangling.' (Ch. 22)
16. Where was the fair where Erik was found by a Samarkand merchant?

Answer: Nijni-Novgorod

'A fur merchant, on his way to Samarkand from Nijni-Novgorod, described the wonders he had seen in Erik's tent.' (Epilogue)
17. Rosy Hours of -------------------?

Answer: Mazenderan

' 'Ah, you wretch!' I exclaimed. 'Have you forgotten the Rosy Hours of Mazenderan?' 'Yes,' he replied, suddenly sad, 'I prefer to forget them, though I did make the little sultana laugh.' ' (Ch. 22)
18. When does the novel take place?

Answer: 1880

The original edition was published in 1910. Leroux says in his Foreward, 'The events in question go back only thirty years...'
19. '----------! ----------! Any ---------- to sell?'?

Answer: Barrels

The title of Ch.25 as well as the chant Raoul and the Daroga hear when they're in Erik's wine cellar.
20. What happens to Erik when he visits the Daroga for the last time?

Answer: He starts choking

'Erik's emotion was so strong that he had to warn the Persian not to look at him because he was choking and had to take off his mask.' (Ch.27)
