Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the nursing home where Evelyn and Ninny meet?

Answer: Rose Terrace

Evelyn Couch goes with her husband, Ed, to see Ed's mother, "Big Momma". But "Big Momma" hates Evelyn and runs her out of the room! Evelyn then goes into the visitor's lounge where she meets Ninny, and Ninny begins to tell Evelyn the story of Ruth Jamison and Imogene "Idgie" Threadgoode.

Before the first chapter of the book, there's an opening statement by Ninny:

"I may be sitting here at the Rose Terrace Nursing Home, but in my mind I'm over at the Whistle Stop Cafe having a plate of fried green tomatoes.-Mrs. Cleo Threadgoode, June, 1986".
2. What is the name of the weekly bulletin published by Dot Weems?

Answer: The Weems Weekly

Dot Weems is the Post Mistress for the Whistle Stop post office. She keeps the residents informed of everything happening in Whistle Stop during the week. Her first bulletin is dated June 12, 1929 and announces the opening of The Whistle Stop Cafe. Her last one is dated June 25, 1969, and tells her readers that it is her last issue, as the post office is closing.

She and her husband Wilbur have decided to move to Fairhope, Alabama.
3. Was Sipsey Peavey Big George's natural mother?

Answer: No

Sipsey, according to the book, had never married nor had children of her own. She loved children, and was thrilled one day when a friend of hers told her that there was a girl from Birmingham at the Whistle Stop train station that was giving a baby away. Sipsey raced down and met the woman.

The woman told Sipsey that she was on her way back to Birmingham, and couldn't show up with a baby, as her husband was in jail. She gave the baby boy to Sipsey. She named him George Pullman Peavey, after the man that invented the Pullman railway cars. "Poppa" Threadgoode, Idgie's father, taught George to be a butcher.

He became famous in the area for his barbecued pork.
4. How did Idgie and Ruth meet?

Answer: At the Threadgoode home

Ruth had come to Whistle Stop from Valdosta, Georgia to spend the summer and to be in charge of the Baptist Youth Organization activities for the Baptist church. She boarded with the Threadgoode family. She was already engaged to Frank Bennett, and planned to marry him that fall.

By the end of the summer, Idgie and Ruth were already devoted to each other, and Idgie had hysterics when Ruth returned to Valdosta to marry Frank. Several years later, Ruth sent a message to Idgie to let her know she wanted to return to Whistle Stop, as Frank Bennett was a very abusive husband. Sipsey's son Big George, Idgie and her two brothers Cleo and Julian went to Valdosta and brought Ruth back to Whistle Stop.

She and Idgie then opened The Whistle Stop Cafe.
5. What did Evelyn do to the two girls who took the parking spot that Evelyn was waiting for at the Piggly Wiggly supermarket?

Answer: She rammed their car

The girls were driving a red Volkswagen while Evelyn was driving Ed's Ford LTD. When Evelyn told the girls that she had been waiting for that spot, one said, "Let's face it lady, I'm younger and faster than you are!" She rammed the car six times, almost totally destroying it.

When the girls came out of the store and saw the damage, one said, "Look what you've done! Are you crazy?" Evelyn replied, "Let's face it, honey, I'm older than you are and have more insurance than you do." Then she drove away.
6. Who created the fictional character "Towanda"; was it Evelyn or Idgie?

Answer: Evelyn

In the movie, it was Idgie. But in the book, it was Evelyn. She first started thinking about a "Superwoman" after the encounter with the rude boy who pushed her down at the Piggly Wiggly supermarket. She created "Towanda The Avenger!", also known as "Towanda The Magnanimous, Righter of Wrongs and Queen Without Compare".

But after Ninny suggested that Evelyn was just going through menopause, Evelyn saw her doctor and was given a prescription for estrogen. She became much calmer, and "Towanda" gradually faded away.
7. Who was the man that fell in love with Ruth, but never let her know?

Answer: Smokey Lonesome

Smokey fell in love with Ruth from the first day he met her. Since he was a hobo, he never let her know. He managed to get a picture of her that he carried with him, pinned inside of his coat. Idgie knew, but never said anything either. Smokey thought that Ruth was the most beautiful and kindest woman he had ever met. Poor Smokey!
8. Both Idgie and Big George stood trial for Frank Bennet's murder.

Answer: True

The prosecutor didn't seem to bother with Big George much, assuming he was automatically guilty because he was an African American. (This was in the 1950's, long before African Americans had any rights.) He really hammered away at Idgie, and things were not going well for her until Reverend Scroggins testified on Idgie's behalf.

He lied on the stand after taking the oath with his own Bible, which turned out to be just an ordinary book. Although Idgie had constantly played tricks on him, she had helped his son out of some trouble with the law, so he agreed to help her.

The judge declared that Frank Bennett died by accident and dismissed the case.
9. Who really killed Frank Bennett?

Answer: Sipsey

Frank Bennett had gotten drunk, drove to Whistle Stop, and kicked in the back door of the cafe. Idgie and Ruth weren't home, and Sipsey was baby sitting Ruth's son. Bennett hit Sipsey with the butt of his gun, knocking her down. He picked up the baby and put him in his truck.

Then Sipsey hit him in the back of the head with a five pound cast iron skillet, crushing his skull and killing him instantly. Big George and his son Artis cut up the body, and-hold on to your stomachs-served his body in the cafe as barbecued pork! ("The secret's in the sauce!")
10. Ninny Threadgoode leaves the nursing home to go live with Ed and Evelyn.

Answer: False

It happened that way in the movie, but in the book, she died. Evelyn was in Montecito, California at the "Forever Slim Lodge" for a weight loss program. She received a letter from Ninny's neighbor, telling her of Ninny's death. Ninny left Rose Terrace after Mrs. Otis died, and returned to Whistle Stop. (Her home was not torn down as it was in the movie.) Her neighbor went to pick her up to take her to church, and found that Ninny had died in her sleep at the age of 86.
