Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character in this novel is Maggie Fortenberry. What did Maggie do for a living?

Answer: Real Estate Agent

Maggie worked for Red Mountain Realty in Birmingham, Alabama. Business was not going well, however. Red Mountain had once been the top agency in Birmingham, until an unscrupulous rival named Babs Bingington (also known as "The Beast of Birmingham") came along.

She stole listings and clients right and left and became the top agent instead. Red Mountain Realty was founded by Hazel Whisenknott, who was a business dynamo. After Babs came to Birmingham, Hazel began to lose clients. Then Hazel died, and most of the agents left. Now there were only Maggie, Ethel Clipp and Brenda Peoples left, but they did their best to hang on!
2. Maggie made a major decision about her life. What was her decision?

Answer: She planned to commit suicide

Maggie was a former "Miss Alabama", and felt she was obligated to maintain certain standards. However, she felt she was failing at this, and had made a decision to just end it all with little fuss. Her plan was to buy a rubber raft, some weights to put around her wrists and ankles, then go out on the river and jump overboard. Fortunately, every time she decided on a day to carry out her plan, something happened to delay her!
3. Maggie heard a rumor that her favorite house in all of Birmingham was going to be sold. What was the name of this mansion?

Answer: Crestview

Maggie was at the beauty salon having her hair done when she overheard two women talking about Dee Dee Dalton planning to put Crestview up for sale. Maggie had grown up dreaming about living in that beautiful mansion that sat atop Red Mountain. Crestview was built by a man from Scotland named Angus Crocker in 1867.

He had one son, Edward, who never married. In his will, Edward left the house to his business partner, Dee Dee Dalton's father. This was the first time in Crestview's history that it was put up for sale, but Dee Dee Dalton felt she was too old to keep it up.

After talking with Dee Dee's lawyer, Maggie found out that the listing was supposed to go to Babs Bingington, but after careful thought, the lawyer changed his mind and asked Maggie to handle the sale personally. Maggie was thrilled! She felt she had actually stolen the listing from Babs!
4. When Maggie and Brenda toured the mansion, what did they find in the attic?

Answer: A human skeleton in an old trunk

Maggie and Brenda found the trunks in a corner. They still had clear address labels dated June 2, 1946 and read: "Deliver To: Mr. Edward Crocker". Brenda decided to open them. In one, Maggie found ladies' evening gowns, and Brenda found men's evening wear in the other.

While going through the clothing, Brenda suddenly yelled, "Woooo!" and jumped back. Maggie asked her what was wrong, but Brenda just pointed at the trunk. Maggie came to look, and saw, hanging on a hanger, a skeleton dressed in a formal Scottish kilt, a plaid sash and a black velvet jacket.

They ran out of the attic, ending up in the living room. While they were discussing what to do, Maggie noticed an oil portrait of Edward Crocker hanging above the fireplace. They became even more frightened when they noticed that Edward was wearing the exact same clothing in the portrait! They began to think that maybe Edward had been murdered and his body hidden in the trunk!
5. Maggie decided to do some research about Edward and his sister, Edwina Crocker. What was so strange about them?

Answer: There were no official records anywhere that Edwina had ever existed

There were many articles in the Birmingham newspapers about Edward Crocker and his twin sister, Edwina. Edwina lived in Scotland, and Edward seemed unusually devoted to her. He would take a vacation from work for three months every year, and meet Edwina in London. Maggie found numerous photographs of Edwina and Edward, but never any of Edward and Edwina together.

She tried to find some kind of records, such as a birth certificate, but failed. The mystery intrigued her, and she was determined to find out more.
6. Did the mansion ever sell?

Answer: Yes

Maggie's good friends David and Mitzi Lee called Maggie on Christmas morning, and told her that they wanted to return to Birmingham and had decided to buy Crestview. Maggie told them about the skeleton, but they were not upset at all. Mitzi thought it would make a nice conversation piece!
7. Did Maggie go ahead with her decision about her life?

Answer: No

Maggie still wanted to commit suicide. After Crestview sold, she decided that the time had come. She went down to the river, got in the raft, and rowed out to the middle of the river. She glued the velcro on the weights so that they would not come apart in the water.

Then she jumped overboard. As she sank, she realized that she was making a terrible mistake, and tried to struggle back to the surface. But the weights held firm. Suddenly, she woke up and realized she was still in bed and it had all been a nightmare! She realized then that she didn't really want to die, after all.
8. Maggie and her two co-workers suddenly became millionaires. How did they accomplish this?

Answer: They inherited the money from Hazel Whisenknott

Hazel had owned two businesses, Red Mountain Realty and another business called L.P. Investments. Hazel had transferred L.P. Investments into her husband's name with the understanding that if the businesses were ever sold, Maggie, Brenda and Ethel would receive 50 percent of the profits.

When Harry died, both were sold. Since both were worth millions, each one received a check for over 8 million dollars! The great thing about it was that Babs Bingington had just bought Red Mountain Realty and fired all three. With her eight million, Ethel bought Red Mountain Realty back and fired Babs!
9. What was the secret of the Crocker twins, Edward and Edwina?

Answer: They were the same person

Angus Crocker's wife Edwina, had given birth to twins, a boy and a girl. Sadly, Edwina and the baby boy died the same night. Since the laws at that time (1884) did not allow women to own a business, Angus bribed a doctor to change the birth certificate from a girl to a boy. Poor Edwina had to spend her life pretending she was a male.

She managed to pull it off, however. Angus had brought her to America when she was still a baby and founded the largest coal, iron and steel company in the South. When Edwina grew up and took over the business after Angus' death, she made even more millions.

She found out later that she had leukemia. She was on her annual trip to London when she died from the disease. Her last wish was to be buried at Crestview.

She couldn't be sent right away because of World War II, so she was buried temporarily in Scotland. Seven years after the war ended, her life-long nurse and her nurse's brother made secret arrangements. Since she had no official birth certificate, she could not be sent through official channels in case the body was examined by a coroner.

They took Edwina's body to a family friend who was an undertaker. He dressed Edwina's skeleton in the family kilt, sash and jacket, hid the body in the trunk, and shipped it to America. The nurse planned to follow a few months later and see to it that Edwina was buried at Crestview, but she died of old age before she could make the trip. Therefore, the trunks were never opened until Brenda opened them.
10. Did Maggie ever marry?

Answer: Yes

At the time Maggie was in the "Miss Alabama" contest, she had been dating a man named Charles. After she won, Charles proposed, but Maggie turned him down, saying she wasn't ready for marriage. She later regretted her decision, but then it was too late, as Charles had married someone else.

At the time she was selling Crestview, Charles came to see her. He was now a widower. Eventually he and Maggie got back together and married. David and Mitzi Lee were unable to buy Crestview after all, so Maggie used part of the 8 million she inherited from Hazel and bought the house herself.

She and Charles moved in after they were married.
