Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A nine year old girl's parents have divorced so she is on a trip with her mother and brother. Somehow, she becomes separated from them and becomes lost in the woods along the Appalachian Trail. What book am I describing?

Answer: The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

King does an amazing job of telling everything from the viewpoint of Trisha McFarland, a nine year old girl. The sounds and the smells of the forest come alive as she is being chased by something. But what is this something? How can poor Trisha escape. You can feel the terror and panic of this brave young girl.
2. A teenage girl lives in fear of her mother. She is an outcast at school. However, she also has a frightening power that is almost indescribable. Unable to take anymore from her mother or her classmates, she reveals her power in a most destructive fashion and the consequences are deadly! Name this terrifying book.

Answer: Carrie

"Carrie" was Stephen King's first novel to be published. It was released in 1974. While the story is terrifying, it is also heartbreaking as we feel for poor Carrie White who is mercilessly tortured by her fellow students. When she comes home, we discover her mother is not exactly the doting mother a teenage girl needs. Over time, her power builds inside her until, well you'll just have to read the book.
3. A woman is in an abusive relationship for too many years. She makes the courageous and dangerous decision to leave her husband. Of course, the story does not end there. Her husband is a cop, and a very resourceful one. She tries to start a new life in a new city but is always looking over her shoulder and for good reason. What is the name of this thriller?

Answer: Rose Madder

Rose Daniels is on the run from her psychotic husband, Norman Daniels. Norman has no conscience and he is determined to make his wife pay. For anyone who gets in the way, the consequences are brutal. There are some parts of this book that are tough to read as King gets into the mind of Norman Daniels, which is not a pretty picture.
4. Dan Torrance had a rough childhood. Sadly, his adulthood is not much better. Struggling through life, he has left a wake of hurt and destruction. However, there is some good in Danny Boy, as he discovers he is not the only one with some very special talents. Do you know the name of this book?

Answer: Doctor Sleep

"Doctor Sleep" is the sequel to "The Shining". King peels back the curtain so we can see just what has become of Danny (now Dan) Torrance. The story, though, is about much more than just Dan. We are introduced to a young girl named Abra Stone who has her own unique abilities that Danny can relate to.

Unfortunately, there are some very sinister folks who plan on doing some serious harm to Abra. Danny knows he has no choice but to come to the aid of the young girl.
5. King gives us his own version of apocalyptic allegory with this book. The characters are many and memorable. A disease is wiping out people across the globe leaving a mere handful of survivors. Regardless of their past, each person now has a part to play, a purpose to serve. Name the book.

Answer: The Stand

For me, "The Stand" is my personal favorite of all the Stephen King books I have ever read. It is vastly superior (and more detailed) than the TV mini-series of the early 1990s. Mother Abigail is the frail, but wise, leader of one side. Randall Flag, known as the Dark Man, is the leader of the other side.

A battle will take place like no other. The complete and uncut version of the book is over 1100 pages but worth the time it takes to read it.
6. The character of Thad Beaumont is an author who creates an alter ego named George Stark who literally comes to life. Set in Castle Rock, Maine, Stark makes himself know by some devilish activity. Since, Thad created Stark, then he must face him to protect his family. What is the name of his book?

Answer: The Dark Half

George Stark is actually the dark half of Thad Beaumont; the half that he does not want to acknowledge even exists. King had his own "dark half" named Richard Bachman that he created as a pseudonym that he used to write some of his novels. "The Dark Half" was released in 1989 and dedicated to Shirley Sonderegger.
7. Ned Wilcox has taken a keen interest in a certain automobile. His father Curt was a state trooper who was killed in a gruesome accident. Sometimes, it is best to leave things alone, but Ned is a determined 18 year old boy/man. Name this King novel.

Answer: From A Buick 8

King has his own way of describing this peculiar Buick. The car has a lack of the normal identifying markers that so many cars have. Of course, that leads to the question of where exactly did this car come from. Set in Pennsylvania, we see how Ned becomes very close to Troop D, where his father worked for so many years. He is seeking some answers, but what answers will he find?
8. Set in the frigid woods of Maine, King brings us the story of four men. The story is a reunion of sorts. The story takes place in the city of Derry. In this story, they encounter a creature from another world. But this is not just any creature. Name this book.

Answer: Dreamcatcher

"The Dreamcatcher" takes place in the same city as "It" and "Insomnia". The foursome meet as children and grow up and each man has his own personal life and issues he is dealing with. However, they do try to stay in touch as they are bound by something in their past that most people cannot relate to. "The Dreamcatcher" is hard to describe as King has once again created a sinister being that is both unique and frightening.
9. A certain woman has been under suspicion for nearly three decades. That was when her husband died. Many of the folks on Little Tall Island have suspected her of being a murderer. King reveals the past to the reader as we discover exactly what happened to Joe, her husband. Tell me what Stephen King novel I am describing.

Answer: Dolores Claiborne

Dolores is older now and so is her daughter, Selena. Their relationship is not exactly normal. The past binds them together although neither one of them wants to be reminded of it. The past can be painful. Recalling it even more so. "Dolores Claiborne" is hard to read at times as King does not shy away from topics that make the reader uncomfortable.
10. Stephen King also wrote some of his novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. One of these novels is called "Desperation". Bachman wrote another book that uses most of the exact same characters as "Desperation" although he puts them in some sort of parallel universe. Can you name this other novel?

Answer: The Regulators

"The Regulators" takes place in a neighborhood that becomes the target of some evil creatures that are hatched from the mind of a mentally disturbed young man who has powers that cannot be controlled. It is a violent story that takes no prisoners. Not for the squeamish. A great read, nonetheless.
