Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mr. Earnshaw returns from a trip with a strange orphan, whom he names Heathcliff. What is Heathcliff's real name?

Answer: The reader never learns

The reader never finds out what Heathcliff's real name is, nor does one ever learn anything about his childhood. Mr. Earnshaw names him after one of his own deceased children. In his youth, Heathcliff simply goes by his Christian name, and as an adult he becomes Mr. Heathcliff.
2. As a child, Heathcliff is friendly and loving.

Answer: False

Even as a child, Heathcliff is withdrawn and shows no affection for anyone other than Catherine. Strangely, he does not even have an attachment to his savior Mr. Earnshaw.
3. What happens to Heathcliff upon Mr. Earnshaw's death?

Answer: He becomes reduced to servant status at Wuthering Heights.

For unknown reasons, Hindley does not throw Heathcliff to the streets. Instead, he treats him cruelly and counts him as a servant.
4. Why does Heathcliff leave Wuthering Heights?

Answer: He overhears Catherine saying that she could never marry him.

Heathcliff never discloses where he goes when he leaves Wuthering Heights. Nelly suspects that he has been in the military, due to his upright carriage and stern demeanor.
5. When Heathcliff returns, he has several schemes of revenge to conduct. Which of the following is NOT one of his plans?

Answer: Hurting Catherine

Heathcliff still loves Cathy after her betrayal in marrying Edgar, and never wishes to harm her directly. He is not so forgiving towards his childhood foes, however.
6. Why does Heathcliff marry Isabella?

Answer: To gain Thrushcross Grange through her inheritance

Heathcliff cares nothing for Isabella, and treats her cruelly throughout the novel. Cathy tries to caution Isabella that Heathcliff could never love a Linton, but Isabella ignores her warning. Heathcliff wishes to destroy all of the Lintons for ruining his happiness.
7. How does Heathcliff's soul mate Catherine die?

Answer: After childbirth

Catherine dies in the first half of the book, leaving Heathcliff to mourn over her for the rest of the book. Due to this fact, some critics claim that this book is about Heathcliff only, not the love story of Heathcliff and Catherine.
8. What happens to Heathcliff's disposition after Catherine's death?

Answer: He becomes more vengeful and even more obsessed with his "idol".

Heathcliff's obsession with Catherine never lessens. He continues to torment Hareton and Cathy, punishing them for the sins of their fathers.
9. Heathcliff is proud of his son.

Answer: False

Heathcliff despises his sickly and weak son, Linton. He grows to care more for Hareton, his enemy's child, than his own progeny.
10. What is one of the last statements Heathcliff utters about Catherine?

Answer: "By God! She's relentless".

In Heathcliff's full declaration regarding Cathy, before his death, he exclaims: "Well, there is one who won't shrink from my company! By God! She's relentless. Oh, damn it! It's unutterably too much for flesh and blood to bear--even mine".
