"Hitchhiker's Guide" Quote Quiz

Who said that? In this quiz, you must match up quotes from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", by Douglas Adams, with the characters who said them. The best strategy is to figure out who is being spoken to first, then think about who would say it.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays."

Answer: Arthur Dent

Personally, I can't get the hang of Mondays. But having the world actually come to an end is bound to ruin anyone's day.
2. "There's no point in acting all surprised about it."

Answer: Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz

Prosser could almost have said this, too. Bureaucracies are the same everywhere, it seems.
3. "You'll need to have this fish in your ear."

Answer: Ford Prefect

"You just come along with me and have a good time. The Galaxy's a fun place. You'll need to have this fish in your ear."
One of the oddest things said in any work of literature, Ford Prefect refers to a Babel Fish, one of the oddest creatures in the Creation it disproves.
4. "Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is."

Answer: The Guide

The Introduction begins like this:
"Space," it says, "is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space. Listen..." and so on.

Chapter 8.
5. "Hummmmmmmyummmmmmmah!"

Answer: A Door

The day doors start speaking to me is the day I retire to a small, white room with soft walls. About the Sirius Cybernetics Corporatio; it is said that the only reason they are still in operation is that their fundamental design flaws are completely overshadowed by their superficial design flaws.
6. "I can't help what you may personally be in orbit around..."

Answer: Ford Prefect

"You're crazy, Zaphod," he was saying, "Magrathea is a myth, a fairy story. It's what parents tell their kids about at night if they want them to grow up to be economists, it's..."
"And that's what we are currently in orbit about," insisted Zaphod.
"Look, I can't help what you may personally be in orbit around," said Ford, "but this ship..."
"Computer!" shouted Zaphod.
"Oh no..."

Chapter 16.

Without bringing in Eddie, Zaphod and Ford may have kept going round and round about this one. ;)
7. "Loath it or ignore it, you can't like it."

Answer: Marvin

Marvin, The Paranoid Android was such the favorite character, he recorded at least two songs about his misery, and Radiohead named an album after him. I was sorry to see him go.
8. "We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!"

Answer: A Philosopher

"You just let the machines get on with the adding up," warned Majikthise, "and we'll take care of the eternal verities, thank you very much. You want to check your legal position, you do, mate. Under law the Quest for Ultimate Truth is quite clearly the inalienable prerogative of your working thinkers. Any bloody machine goes and actually finds it and we're straight out of a job, aren't we? I mean, what's the use of our sitting up half the night arguing that there may or may not be a God if this machine only goes and gives you his bleeding phone number the next morning?"
"That's right," shouted Vroomfondel, "we demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!"

Chapter 25.

Just like a philosopher to demand an oxymoron.
9. "Is no one going to say, 'No, you can't possibly, let me go instead'?"

Answer: Ford Prefect

"Right," said Ford, "I'm going to have a look."
He glanced round at the others.
"Is no one going to say, No, you can't possibly, let me go instead?"
They all shook their heads.
"Oh well," he said, and stood up.

Chapter 33.

Hooray for bravery!
10. "This is probably the best button to press."

Answer: Slartibartfast

"The aircar was empty, but Arthur recognized it as belonging to Slartibartfast.
It had a note from him pinned to part of its sparse instrument panel. The note had an arrow drawn on it, pointing at one of the controls.
It said, This is probably the best button to press."
