Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Trillian
Answer: Benign
Trillian is from Earth and, yes, she is human. Arthur meets her at a party and is interested but before he can muster up the courage to make an impulsive move, Trillian is swept off her feet by the very charismatic Zaphod Beeblebrox. Zaphod whisks her away in his spaceship, the Heart of Gold, and, as a result, Trillian manages to avoid the Earth's destruction.
A highly intelligent woman, she manages to approach any situation logically and, possibly, with a lot more sense than anyone else in the book.
2. Barman of the Old Pink Dog Bar
Answer: Evil
He's not a nice fellow at all. His bar is based in Han Dold City and it's overflowing with killers and thugs of all races. As a result, you could possibly understand his aggressive nature. But, when Ford Prefect seeks to pay for his drink with an American Express card, which the barman doesn't recognise, he informs Ford "You gonna die, boy", at which point a disembodied hand comes out from behind the bar and proceeds to crush Ford's shoulder blades. Ford manages to worm his way out of the scrape by telling the barman that he'll put in a favourable review for the bar in the Hitchhiker's Guide.
The barman relents, but that still doesn't make him a nice guy.
3. Krikkit Robots
Answer: Evil
The Krikkit Robots were the major players in "Life, the Universe and Everything" (1982), the third book in the series. These dudes were pure evil and lived for one purpose... to destroy the universe. Amongst the arsenal that they'd used in the "Krikkit Wars" was a supernova bomb, that looked like a cricket ball and a bat.
As a consequence, no one played the game of cricket in the universe, except for the people on Earth, who were shunned as a result. The robots met their match when they tried to supplant Marvin's massive intellect only to find that Marvin's massive depression came with it and it invaded all of their thinking.
4. Slartibartfast
Answer: Benign
Slartibartfast is a Magrathean alien who is an award winning designer of planets. In case you missed the memo, he was recognised for his wonderful work in creating the magnificent fjords of Norway. It is he who manages to take Arthur Dent aside and show him where the Earth came from and the reasons why it, eventually, had to be destroyed.
He then moves on to continue his work in creating parts of Africa for the second version of Earth.
5. Eddie
Answer: Benign
Eddie is the shipboard computer on the Heart of Gold spaceship and he possesses a split personality... well, to be more correct, a back-up personality. He has a massive memory, virtually controls everything on the Heart of Gold and records everything he says on ticker tape.
His primary personality is cheery, and he tends to remain so, which drives Zaphod Beeblebrox spare. Eddie maintains this demeanour even when the ship and its crew are in dire danger. His backup personality is a bit more subdued, and he becomes a bit more motherly and caring.
6. Gail Andrews
Answer: Evil
Gail appears in the fifth book of the series, "Mostly Harmless" (1992). She is the advisor to the President of the United States and, somehow, she worms her way into his confidence and becomes the President's lover. She doesn't care about anyone apart from herself and, when she feels that the war in the Middle East is a threat to her personal safety, she convinces the President that he must bomb Damascus.
She'll definitely be on Santa's naughty list.
7. Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz
Answer: Evil
Jeltz is a Vogon civil servant. Actually, he's more than that, he's the Commander of the Vogon Constructor Fleet who are given the orders to destroy the planet Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass. He's described as "not a pleasant sight, even for other Vogons", doesn't smile, enjoys being angry and has an intense dislike for hitchhikers. On finding them, he prefers to torture them with his poetry or eject them into space.
8. Gag Halfrunt
Answer: Evil
This is Zaphod Beeblebrox's brain care specialist, who early on concludes that should the Ultimate Question (to Life, the Universe and Everything Else) ever be found it would put him and all other psychiatrists out of business. Distressed, it is he who cons (and rewards) the Vogons into destroying the Earth. If you're only prepared to look after yourself Gag, at the expense of Earth, you definitely end up on the naughty list.
9. Vroomfondel and Majikthise
Answer: Benign
These two guys are philosophers who represent the "Amalgamated Union of Philosophers, Sages, Luminaries and Other Thinking Persons" and they are concerned that the super computer, Deep Thought, will put them out of a job. As a consequence, they demand that Deep Thought be shut down immediately and that they be given "rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty". Eventually Deep Thought assuages them by informing them that it will take it 7.5 million years to come back with a response to the ultimate question and that they could continue to justify their own existence by arguing about what answer the computer will eventually come up with.
10. Infinidim Enterprises
Answer: Evil
These dudes take over the offices of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and, immediately, beginning employing Vogons as henchmen. They then set out to create the "Guide Mark II" which, unlike its predecessor that was there to help poor hitchhikers, would help budding entrepreneurs to make loads of money. Greed is not always good, guys.
