Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of this book, we see Jazz (also known as Jasper Dent) spying on a crime scene. A girl was murdered. What body part did the murderer cut off of her body?

Answer: a finger

The killer cut off one finger. On his next victim, he cuts off two fingers and leaves one behind. On the next victim, he cuts off three and leaves one behind and so forth.
2. When Jazz goes to the police and tells G. William that he thinks it's a serial killer, does G. William believes him?

Answer: no

He thinks that it's unlikely that there would be another serial killer in this town. Jazz also asked to see the body, but he says no, so Jazz and Howie sneak in at night to look at it. They get caught, but G. William let's them off with a warning.
3. Howie is described as "fragile". Why is this?

Answer: he is a hemophiliac

Howie is a type-A hemophiliac. He will bleed or bruise easily. When they were ten, some older boys were once poking at him to make him bruise. Jazz, using knowledge he got from his dad on how to hurt people, beat them up. Ever since then, Howie has been his best friend.
4. How many people did Billy Dent murder?

Answer: 123-124

Jazz's father, Billy, used to teach him how to be a serial killer and brought him along on his murders. When he was arrested, they found 13-year-old Jazz with the body of his most recent victim. There were 123 victims that are known, but Jazz thinks that there is another victim that hasn't been proven. He thinks his father killed his mom.
5. All of Billy Dent's victims were human.

Answer: false

He killed his son's dog and made him watch. Jasper cried, even though his dad taught him not to, but Billy said that it was okay to cry. When he stopped crying, his dad told him to look around, and pointed out that crying fixed nothing.
6. Who had Jazz lived with since his father was arrested, four years ago?

Answer: his grandmother

She's Billy's mother and Jazz's grandmother. She's kind of mean and has a tendency to go crazy. She's supposed to be taking care of Jazz, but really Jazz is taking care of her.
7. Who does Jazz have coffee with almost every morning?

Answer: Howie

Jazz and Howie meet at the Coff-E-Shop almost every morning before school. He once invited his girlfriend, Connie, to come too, but she said they needed their guy time. They are often served by a waitress named Helen, who gets killed by the impressionist.
8. Who is Doug Weathers?

Answer: a news reporter

Dough Weathers is a big shot news caster who is obsessed with the Billy Dent case. He is constantly trying to get Jazz to sell out, but Jazz hates him. Howie and Jazz later suspect that he is the killer.
9. Jazz and Connie are starring in a school production of "The Crucible". After play practice one day, they run into a man name Jeff Fulton. Who does he claim to be?

Answer: the father of one of Billy's victims

He says he is the father of Harriet Klein, Billy's 83rd victim. Her corpse was found nailed to the ceiling of a Church. Jeff Fulton wants to know what her last words were, but Jazz doesn't know. Connie convinces him to leave Jazz alone because he didn't do anything.
10. Why does G. William visit Jazz, at his grandmother's house, in the middle of the night?

Answer: there has been another murder

There has been another murder and he comes to tell Jazz that he's right. There is another serial killer in Lobo's Nod.
11. Why does Deputy Erickson take Jazz out of school and down to the police station?

Answer: Jazz sent G. William a suspicious answering machine message

Soon after G. William left the previous night, Jazz called his phone and left a message. He told him that the next victim would be a waitress, she would be killed by injection, her body would be found in a kneeling position and her hands would be tied together to mimic a prayer.

This is a description of Billy's third victim. At first they think that Billy has escaped, but G. William calls the prison and confirms that he hasn't. Then they realize that someone is redoing Billy Dent's murders.
12. What do Connie's father and Jazz's grandmother have in common?

Answer: they are both racist

Connie's dad hates Jazz, but it's not because his dad was a serial killer. It's because Jazz is white. Jazz's grandmother hates Connie because she's black, so Jazz once drugged her with sleeping pills so that Connie could come over.
13. What is on Jazz's bedroom wall?

Answer: pictures

The pictures are of his father's victims. He has one picture for all 124 of them. He puts them there to remind him of what his father did and what he does not want to become.
14. Who do Jazz and Howie suspect is the serial killer?

Answer: Weathers or Erickson

Howie thinks its Weathers, trying to create news. Jazz thinks its Erickson, the new deputy who is often the first at the crime scene.
15. Jazz, Howie and Connie figure out that the next victim will be Ginny, their school's drama teacher. Jazz and Howie go to her home to warn her. Do they get there in time?

Answer: no

When they get there, they realize that the killer is already there. Jazz sends Howie to go and call the police, while he breaks in. He gets in just in time to see the killer leave, and see Ginny die.
16. What does the killer do to Howie?

Answer: slash him

The killer slashes Howie and he's bleeding. Jazz tells the paramedics, who have come for Ginny, that Howie is a type-A hemophiliac. They don't believe him because Howie forgot his medical bracelet. Jazz threatens them by convincing them that he will hunt down all their friends and make them watch them get tortured if they don't help Howie, so they do.

Then Erickson comes along and arrests Jazz, but G. Williams shows up and lets Jazz go.
17. Howie's parents yell at Jazz and blame him for what happened to their son.

Answer: false

While Jazz is in the waiting room at the hospital, he sees Howie's parents come in. They never liked Jazz so he assumes that they are going to blame this on him, but they don't.
18. When Jazz comes home from visiting Howie in the hospital, who does he find out has been there?

Answer: the Impressionist

The serial killer crosses off the victims he's copied on Jazz's wall of pictures of his father's victims. Then he circles the fifth one, and writes that he is the Impressionist.
19. Does Jazz ever visit his father?

Answer: yes

He asked G. William to help him visit his father, in hopes of getting information on the case. His father is very happy to see him and is convinced that Jazz will still become a serial killer one day. He claims that he is happy in prison and that he gets a lot of fan mail from wannabe serial killers.
20. Who is the Impressionist?

Answer: Jeff Fulton

Jeff Fulton is not who he claims to be. He's just pretending to be the parent of a victim in order to divert suspicion. He's really the one causing the murders. He breaks into Jazz's home, ties him up and tries to convince him to kill his grandmother. Then Howie and Connie burst in, because Howie had a strange worry about Jazz.
