It turns out that Bridget's mother's boyfriend has defrauded a number of people, including Mark Darcy's parents, out of a great deal of money in a bogus time-share scheme. Mark and Bridget immediately drive out to Una and Geoffrey's (of Turkey Curry Buffet fame) where Mark gets to business making phone calls while Bridget reflects that the gathering is a not entirely unwelcome suspension of the normal order of things, rather like Christmas or the time her grandmother went crazy and ran naked through the neighbor's orchard.

Dan the Australian tells Bridget he has been putting her mail under the door so she won't get cold in the mornings getting the mail in her nightie.
