Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The title "I Sing The Body Electric" comes from a poem. Just for fun, do you know who wrote the poem this line is from?

Answer: Walt Whitman

"I sing the body electric, The armies of those I love engirth me and I engirth them. They will not let me off til I go with them, respond to them, And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the soul." from "The Leaves Of Grass" (1855) by Walt Whitman (1819-1892).
2. In the story "I Sing The Body Electric" what is the motto of Fantoccini Ltd?

Answer: We Shadow Forth

The story was first published in "McCalls" magazine as "The Beautiful One Is Here". The children's mother had just died, and their father got them a wonderful 'humanoid-gene mini-circuited, rechargeable AC-C Mark V Electrical Grandmother' from Fantoccini Ltd. 'Imagine a summer that would never end' is the first line of another story in this collection entitled "Any Friend of Nicholas Nickleby's is a Friend of Mine".
3. When the children's mother dies, what does father obtain from Fantoccini Ltd?

Answer: A humanoid electrical grandmother

When mother died, the father purchased the Electric Grandmother. She turned out to be the best investment he ever made, didn't she?
4. When the mechanical birth-mechanism malfunctions, what does Peter and Polly's baby look like in "Tomorrow's Child"?

Answer: Three-eyed blue pyramid with appendages

The baby was born into another dimension, so it appeared to be a blue pryamid with six appendages and three eyes. This was a very touching story. Parents will understand what this young couple went through. Each of us expects a 'perfect' child, don't we?
5. What was the only solution that Dr. Wolcott could offer to Peter and Polly?

Answer: Send them to another dimension

He told them he could send them into Py's dimension. They would all three see each other as humans. People in this dimension would see them as geometric shapes. Peter and Polly decide to--you'll have to read the story! I'm not giving away the ending.
6. The time traveller comes back in time to pick-up what figure in "The Kilimanjaro Device"?

Answer: Ernest Hemingway

He came to pick-up the old man--Hemingway from the road. "The Parrot Who Met Papa" from this collection and from "Long After Midnight" are also about Hemingway.
7. The old man gets in touch with the time traveler.

Answer: True

He told the old man he was taking him back down the road, not miles but days. He's taking him back to Jan. 10, 1954.
8. What did Aunt Neva tell "The Burning Man" that she is carrying that scared him out of her car?

Answer: All of these

Neva told him she had Bibles in the trunk, a pistol loaded with a silver bullet under the steering wheel, holy water in the carburetor that was blessed in three churches, and a wooden stake and hammer taped to the axle. She said Doug was carrying mandrake root and wolfbane in his pocket, too.
9. On the way back from the lake, what do Doug and Aunt Neva see in the road that makes them stop?

Answer: Little boy

They stop and pick up a little boy in a vanilla colored summer suit. Or was it?
10. The hen laid two special eggs at "The Inspired Chicken Motel". One had the words 'Rest In Peace. Prosperity Is Near' on it, but what was on the other egg?

Answer: Skull and horns of a longhorn steer

The words were plainly there for all to see (shades of "Charlotte's Web")! It spelled out a message of hope so needed back in the late 1920's.
11. Why were Doug, Skip, and their parents at "The Inspired Chicken Motel" in the first place?

Answer: It was a cheap place to stay

It was in the late 1920's and a lot of American families were on the move searching for work. The price of a night's stay was 50 cents, so they stopped. This story is a prime example of how Bradbury weaves his own experiences into his story. His father had indeed worked for a utility company in Illinois, and moved when he was a child.
12. In the story "The Messiah" what was so unusual about a Bishop, a Rabbi, and a Priest getting together for dinner?

Answer: They were sitting on a terrace on Mars

They were sitting on a terrace overlooking the landsape and deserted highways and cities of Mars.
13. That night what Divine Presence does Father Niven thinks he sees in the church?

Answer: Christ

He thinks he sees the figure of Christ from the Cross. What he has done is force a Martian, by the strength of his thoughts, into the likeness of what he thinks Christ crucified looks like. With the image goes all the suffering Christ endured, forced onto the Martian. The image is so strong in Father's Niven's mind because it is Easter.
14. Father Niven agrees to only let the Shape-Shifter go if it promises to do what?

Answer: Come back every Easter and assume the shape

He has to let the Martian go. The shape of the suffering Christ is killing it. But how can he bear to allow the one figure he has always wanted to see, leave? Only by getting the Easter promise, can Father Niven find strength to look away and allow the Martian to go.
15. Which of these stories is not set on Mars?

Answer: I Sing The Body Electric

It is the only one of the stories listed not set on Mars. Thank you for taking my quiz on Ray Bradbury's "I Sing The Body Electric".
