The book takes place in a small town near Sydney, Australia. Although it is fall and winter in the book, it is Australia's summer. Readers could be confused because the characters speak a lot like they do in England.
2. What occupation does Ed Kennedy have?

Ed Kennedy is the main character of the book. He is an underage taxi driver. He works for the Vacant Taxis. He is only nineteen, but he should be twenty to be a cab driver. Throughout the book he drives his taxi.
3. What is the name of Ed's dog?

Answer: the Doorman

The Doorman is seven years old and part Rottweiler and part German Shepard. He is called the Doorman because he always sits right next to the door. In the book, Ed translates what he is saying. Ed takes him for walks a lot and gives him coffee.
4. Ed is sent messages on what kind of playing cards?

Answer: aces

Ed got one ace for each of the four suits. The first card, the ace of diamonds, had three addresses on it. The second card, the ace of clubs, had a message on it. The ace of spades, which was the third one he got, had three authors on it. The last ace he got, the ace of hearts, had three movies on it. The last card he got, though, was a joker with his address on it.
5. In the first chapter, what did Ed do?

Answer: He stopped a bank robber.

At the very beginning of the book Ed and his friends are on the floor in the bank while the bank robber gets the money. When the bank robber was leaving he dropped the gun that he had. Ed ran after him, picked up the gun, and stopped him. The bank robber ended up being part of the whole thing.
6. Fill in the blank of what the ace of spades said. "Say a prayer at the stones of _____."

Answer: home

The message was referring to a place where Ed and his younger brother, Tommy, would fish when they where younger. Ed didn't know what the card meant, but then one day he got a costumer who wanted him to drive down a road. When he told him to stop he got out of the car and ran without paying. Ed ran after him and found himself somewhere familiar.

When he got to the stones of home there were three names carved in the stone.
7. What did Ed have to do for his message to Angie Carusso?

Answer: He had to buy her an ice cream.

Once a week, Angie would buy her kids an ice cream, but she never bought one for herself. It was an easy message for Ed to deliver. He gave her two flavors on a waffle cone. On Christmas, when Angie saw him, she gave him an ice cream in thanks.
8. What did Marv have to do on Christmas Eve?

Answer: kiss Ed's dog on the lips

It was supposed to be Marv's year to hold the annual Christmas card game at his house, but he didn't want to. He does not like buying things. Ed said that he would have the game at his house but he had to kiss the Doorman. Marv kissed the dog on the lips and Ed took a picture.
9. What sport is the annual Sledge Game?

Answer: football

The Sledge Game is played each year in the summer. Marv, Ed, and Ritchie play most years. Ed had to knock down the huge man that he was playing against. On the day of the game, Ed got the third card.
10. Does Ed ever find out who was sending him the cards and conducting the whole thing?

Answer: Yes

After Ed got the last card, the joker, with his address on it, a man got into his taxi and had him drive to all of the places he delivered messages to. Then he had him drive home. The man was the bank robber from the beginning of the book. When Ed went inside there was a young man sitting on his couch.

He told him the whole story of why he did what he did. The man wanted to know that anyone could do something like Ed did. He left Ed a folder with all of his notes in it.
