Jude found the safe behind a painting called "The Retreat." All she wanted from it was the jewelry she had left behind after her relationship with Charlie had ended. Along with her things she found a collection of magical baubles. She ended up taking two of the items: a fragment of a larger ornament and a small blue bead.

Pie came to see Gentle and they decided to leave the Fifth Dominion and go to Patashoqua, which was in the Fourth. The two of them tied their wrists together and blew into their fists. Jude arrived at Gentle's apartment just as the two were leaving for another Dominion. Moments after they disappeared she heard a church bell chiming midnight, and a new year.

She was angry that they had left without her.

After leaving Charlie's place, Jude went home and picked up the blue bead she had taken from the safe. She noticed a blue stain on her hand and tried to wash it off. Minutes passed and Jude realized she was turning blue all over. She then went into an almost meditative/telepathic state and left her body.

She witnessed women around her experiencing many different things and was eventually taken to the tower where the Tabula Rasa kept all of the other Dominions' secrets. Jude saw a woman being held captive underground and later learned she was a Goddess.

A group of officials in the city of Vanaeph employed a creature called The Nullianac. It resembled a large version of praying hands with lobster eyes and dangerously flowing energy in between the palms as well as large blades. It chased Gentle through the streets and cornered him. Acting only on instinct, Gentle raised his hand and spit onto his palm.

He made a fist and blew into it; a magic called pneuma caused a bullet-like force to shoot out of his hand and into the Nullianac, killing it instantly.

Answer: Four and a half months

Pie and Gentle had to wait for a train to take them away from the sad city of Mai-ke`, in the Third Dominion. It was experiencing poor crops and its inhabitants were starving. Gentle sat against a wall and realized he was bored while Pie wrote out numbers on the ground. Gentle guessed it was only March, but Pie explained that, according to his calculations, it was May 17th, and the two of them had been away from Earth for four and a half months.

Pie wanted to see his old friend Scopique, but he was in a hospital for the insane, a place called the Cradle. According to Pie, Scopique was an esteemed doctor and a good ally. He used to live in L'Himby, which was once a place of great meditation.

But when the two arrived at Scopique's home, it was burned, along with most of the city. Pie's friend left him a message telling him he was in the Cradle

Pie and Gentle noticed a gray ocean and a silver beach littered with birds. The birds were seemingly frozen in place and wouldn't move, even as the two drove around the beach. Cautiously, Gentle drove over the frozen sea and toward the Cradle. But then the sun came up, and with it, the birds flew and the ocean began to liquefy. Upon a closer look, the water was actually not water but millions of mercury-colored fish. Gentle saved Pie and fell into the sea of fish.

When he woke up, he couldn't move an inch of his body.

He was presumed dead, but eventually Pie was able to realize his friend was still alive.

Oethac were similar to humans, except their heads made up almost one-third of their entire bodies. Their skulls were incredibly thick. The Nullianac looked like a set of praying hands. They were a rare breed and had the ability to know about their brethren's lives. Zarzi were pesky blood-suckers that resembled bees with wings the size of a dragonfly's.

Its insides were blue. There were other Earth-like creatures like the pensanu, which resembled a rooster, and doeki, obedient creatures that Pie and Gentle travelled on that were similar to llamas. Clive Barker created the Cenobites for his novella "The Hellbound Heart."

Dowd was Oscar Godolphin's helper. He was not human. He was also responsible for many of the deaths in the book. Dowd was "killed" by his master in front of the Tabula Rasa; it was a ploy. Oscar wanted them to believe Dowd was an imposter who had been posing as Oscar. Because Dowd could heal, he survived the stabbing but became even more ruthless. He dressed in fine suits, always apricot-colored. When Oscar attempted to take Jude into Yzorddorex, Jude noticed an apricot-colored blur and knew Dowd was there. He threw Oscar out of the way and travelled with Jude into the city.
