Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Council member originally accused Candy of wanting to cause trouble in the Abarat?

Answer: Nyritta Maku

The Abarat had representatives from each of its sections as members of its Council in order to keep peace. Nyritta Maku hailed from Huffaker and immediately accused Candy during her visit with the Council. Nyritta thought Candy was arrogant and thought it was foolish for her to befriend the geshrat Malingo.

Others, like Jimothi, knew better and tried to let her properly defend herself.
2. Which of the following was not a fruit Candy saw while shopping for food?

Answer: Smatterling

Candy reunited with old companions named Betty Thunder and Legitimate Eddie, and the group decided to eat while walking through the streets of Qualm Hah. All but the smatterling were delicious fruits available. Smatterling was a certain type of fish in the Abarat. Another type of fruit was named kuthuries. The moriana was an expensive but delicious coral-colored juicy fruit.
3. Which Beast of the Efreet did Candy conjure up when her father was trying to kill her?

Answer: Fever Gibe

Bill Quackenbush had declared that his very own daughter was an evil witch and sentenced her to death. Using magic from the Abarat, he created a church and gathered followers. Bill created a machine to drain energy and memories from Candy. In order to escape, Candy created a weak version of a Fever Gibe, a Beast from the Efreet, which frightened all of Bill's followers. Eventually Diamanda arrived to help secure her escape.
4. As always, there were many different types of animals mentioned in the strange Abarat world. Which of the following was not mentioned in the story?

Answer: Luneals

Pixler created mechanical animals that were exact duplicates of real animals, including a Rashamass, which was a mixture of a whale and a millipede. He also used a small tiger tic. Candy was offered sanshee fish while on her way to meet the Abaratian Council. Other fish were mentioned, including decapi, fool fish, and ninkas, all of which traveled in schools.
5. What kind of animal inadvertently helped awaken Christopher Carrion?

Answer: A crab

After his epic battle with his grandmother Mater Motley, Christopher Carrion washed up on a shore, dead. However, the nightmares he kept in his collar lived on. They managed to frighten a crab into thinking it was being devoured alive, thus creating fear, which they thrived upon. Using the fear of the green-blue crabs, the nightmares revived Carrion.
6. While Mater Motley worked her evil magic to bring about the Absolute Midnight, Candy met with a group who called themselves the Kalifee. What did "Kalifee" mean?

Answer: Rebels

The Kalifee was created to resist Mater Motley's evil plans. Those who resisted her were always punished, so the group met and resisted her in secret. Izarith, who Candy met soon after entering the Abarat, proudly explained that "Kalifee" meant rebels, or troublemakers. Other members included Geneva, Jimothi, and the Mischief brothers.
7. Mater Motley created her Absolute Midnight and monsters resurfaced in the chapter entitled "The Fiends". Which monster was not mentioned?

Answer: Waztrill

All monsters except the Waztrill, which was a Beast of the Efreet, began to surface once the sacbrood covered the skies and created darkness. The evil beasts no longer had to hide, and began to spread. Also mentioned were destroyers of ruins named Waikami, the Despotic, as well as the Eight Dynasties who Legitimate Eddie personally despised. Gan Nug could be seen during the chaotic first night summoning more creatures from the depths of the ocean Izabella.
8. The Hag didn't use just her magic to bring about her evil plans. She enlisted the Nephauree's ancient magic. What was another name for the Nephauree?

Answer: Those Who Walk Behind the Stars

The Nephauree came from beyond the stars. They were from a state of mind called the Zael Maz'yre. In Mater Motley's ship "Stormwalker", which was created by the evil beings, there was a massive temple dedicated to them. The Nephauree were also called "Those Who Walk Behind the Stars". They were also mentioned as being the "Enemy of All Living Things".
9. Where did the Hag place her enemies for their death sentences?

Answer: Scoriea

Even Candy was rounded up to be taken to the camp. Mater Motley made sure she was kept with the regular people and not treated as if she was anything special. However, Candy met Christopher Carrion's father Zephario and together, using an ancient magic of Abarataraba, they created a flying glyph large enough to help almost seven thousand people escape their deaths.
10. Who was thrown into Oblivion along with Candy?

Answer: Malingo and Gazza

After Mater Motley's dress, which was made of dolls containing innocent souls, was destroyed, she fled and was furious. The souls of the deceased Carrion family, Christopher's mother and brother and sisters, were released. She told the Nephauree to destroy Candy, so the evil creature used magical hammers to crack the very ground Candy stood upon. Eventually she was forced over the edge of the Abarat world. Gazza, the fisherman who by accident joined with the group, stood with her and fell as well.

The biggest surprise was Malingo falling too. The Hag had cut his body into pieces, including slicing off his head. He was able to fly using his large ears and explained all geshrats were born that way and eventually his body would grow back. All three fell into the mysterious Void and that's how the third book of the Abarat ended.
