The "Doctor Doolittle" books were originally written as letters home to author Hugh Lofting's children, when he was sent off to fight in the trenches in World War I.
There are fourteen books in the series, three of which were published posthumously after Lofting's death in 1947. The first one, "The Story of Doctor Doolittle", was first published in 1920.
"Doctor Doolittle in the Moon" was published in 1928.

"Charlotte's Web", by E. B White, was first published in 1952. The book has since sold over 35 million copies, and been translated into over 20 languages. It was also the recipient of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Prize for Children's Literature in 1970.
E. B. White also wrote the book "Stuart Little" on which the film of 1999 was (loosely) based.

The character of Beelzebub shows how a hero doesn't always have to be big and strong and handsome - he just has to know the right thing and be prepared to do it, even if it is dangerous. "The Wickedest Witch in the World" was the final Miss Smith book to be published, in 1971.
The other three books are "The Tree That Sat Down" (1945), "The Stream That Stood Still" (1948), and "The Mountain of Magic" (1950). All three of the books are now out of print and old copies are highly sought after collector's items.

The story, written by Halsman for his daughters, tell how the tiny girl Piccoli lives in a matchbox and befriends a young boy called Terry; after helping overcome various problems in his life, she floats away on his toy balloon.
