Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Captain Feeney, head of the EDD (Electronics Detection Division), was Eve's former partner and trained her, having seen her potential when he was working in Homicide. He is invariably referred to just by his surname, his first name rarely being mentioned. What is his first name?

Answer: Ryan

Eve and Captain Ryan Feeney are the first two characters the reader is introduced to. 'Naked in Death', the first book in the series, opens with the pair of them investigating the murder of Sharon DeBlass, the granddaughter of a Senator. Eve's association with Feeney goes back some years to when he recognised her talents and requested she work as his partner in the Homicide division, where he became her trainer. Since he transferred to the EDD the two have remained firm friends and Eve often consults him when she needs electronic surveillance and advice. Having suffered horrific abuse at the hands of her father as a small child, Eve now looks on Feeney as the father figure in her life and values his advice and friendship highly.
2. What does Roarke always keep in his pocket to remind himself of the first time he met Eve?

Answer: a button

Eve met her husband Roarke for the first time in 'Naked in Death' at the funeral of murder victim Sharon DeBlass. She had wanted to interview him because an examination of the victim's computer had revealed that she was due to keep an appointment with him on the evening she was killed.

After the funeral he offered her a lift back to New York in his private jet. The two were instantly attracted, although Eve was wary at first. In the ride to the airport in Roarke's chauffeured limo a button falls off the grey suit Eve was wearing, which he picks up and puts in his pocket.

In future books he is often seen to touch the button which he always keeps in his pocket as a souvenir of the first time they met.
3. How did Eve first meet her oldest and best friend, Mavis Freestone?

Answer: arrested her

The friendship between Eve and Mavis goes back to a time before the series was written and in the first book is already well-established. Mavis is a singer and dancer at the Blue Squirrel, a sleazy nightclub. She used to be a con artist, which is how the two first met.

After having arrested Mavis for several cons, the two struck up an unlikely and enduring friendship which grows throughout the books, as does Mavis's singing career when she becomes a successful rock star. Mavis is married to Leonardo and they have a baby daughter Bella Eve (Belle). Eve, unaccustomed to (and somewhat wary of) children, is nevertheless delighted when Mavis and Leonardo choose her to be Belle's Godmother in 'Born in Death'.
4. Mavis is living with, and later married to, Leonardo, the love of her life. He is a very successful man in his chosen field. What is Leonardo's occupation?

Answer: fashion designer

In 'Immortal in Death', Mavis introduces Eve to Leonardo soon after she has begun dating him. They both end up as suspects in the investigation into the murder of top model Pandora, who had had a relationship with Leonardo in the past. Fortunately, Eve knows that neither of them can have committed the crime, which took place in Leonardo's studio.

The relationship between Mavis and Leonardo goes from strength to strength as the series progresses, as does Leonardo's fashion business. He designs the notoriously fashion-shy Eve's wedding dress and many other clothes for her, always with her wishes in mind.

He even goes so far as to make a concealed pocket in each outfit for her weapon!
5. From the beginning of the series, Eve is introduced to Lawrence Charles Summerset, Roarke's butler and general factotum, with whom she develops a mutual love/hate relationship. What is Summerset's real name?

Answer: Basil Kolchek

Summerset is like a father to Roarke, having taken him in when they both lived in Ireland after finding him, aged ten years old, badly injured following a beating from his abusive father. Both ex-crooks, the pair ran a string of successful cons together for some time. He has some medical experience, which can come in useful at times, as he was a medical aide during the 'Urban Wars' which are referred to as having taken place some time before the series began. Eve and Summerset insult each other on a daily basis, to their mutual satisfaction, but the one thing they share is a love for Roarke. Summerset is, however, very fond of Mavis and even gives her away at her wedding to Leonardo.

Brian Kelly is Roarke's friend from the days when they were teenagers together in Dublin. Brian owns a pub called The Penny Pig; he is an occasional character in the books and makes his first appearance in 'Vengeance in Death'. Wilson Buckley is better known as Crack, the owner of the 'Down and Dirty' Club, who appears in several of the novels, and retired detective Frank Wojinski is the first murder victim in 'Ceremony in Death'.
6. Eve's partner Detective Delia Peabody is one of the books' central characters. Not a native New Yorker, she moved there when she decided upon her career choice. In which religion was she brought up by her family?

Answer: Free-Ageism

Peabody was brought up by her family as a 'Free-Ager', an earth religion in the 'In Death' series, although she herself has lapsed. She comes from a large family who, though they were surprised by her wish to join the police, respected her decision and supported her in it. Her parents and her younger brother Zeke are featured in a couple of the books when they visit her.

Peabody's interaction with Eve provides some of the most humorous dialogue in the series. Eve relies on her and trusts her absolutely, and the pair face many dangerous situations together throughout the books. First seen in 'Glory in Death' as Eve's temporary aide, the position quickly became permanent and Peabody was promoted to Detective in 'Imitation in Death'. Her partner is EDD Detective Ian McNab.
7. Which EDD Detective is of Scottish descent, wears several earrings and bright, mis-matched clothing, and is very skilled at working with computers? He is also Peabody's partner.

Answer: Ian McNab

Ian McNab's first appearance is in the sixth book of the series, 'Vengeance in Death'. Although he is attracted to Peabody early on, she finds him intensely irritating; she hates the way he refers to her as 'She-Body' and the pair frequently squabble. McNab is insanely jealous of what he perceives as Peabody's relationship with licensed companion Charles Monroe; the two are actually just good friends, but Peabody doesn't tell McNab this for some time.

As the series progresses the two become lovers, but later break up because of McNab's jealously.

Their relationship eventually turns out happily, however, as after reconciling they decide to cohabit in 'Visions of Death', taking a lease on an apartment in the same block as Mavis and Leonardo, where Eve used to live.
8. Who is the NYPSD's top psychological profiler, frequently consulted by Eve when she needs to discuss the psychological aspects of her cases and suspects?

Answer: Dr Charlotte Mira

Dr Mira is NYPSD's top criminal profiler and often works with Eve. She is always immaculately dressed and has a liking for floral scented teas, which she always offers Eve when she visits her office, although she knows Eve prefers coffee. She thinks of Eve as a daughter, and as the series progresses their friendship does also. Mira is married to Dennis Mira, a comfortable and absent-minded man of whom Eve is very fond. They have been married for over thirty years and have a large, happy family.

Dr Li Morris and Dr Louise Dimatto are both medical doctors. Li Morris is the NYPSD's Chief Medical Examiner, and Louise Dimatto works both at the hospital and the Canal Street Clinic, a charitable clinic which Eve and Roarke have helped fund. Dr Engrave is a botanical expert who appears in 'Immortal in Death'.
9. This character can always be relied on to be 'first' with the news. What is the name of Eve's successful journalist friend and ally, Channel 75's top reporter?

Answer: Nadine

Nadine Furst is introduced in 'Naked in Death' and appears in all the books. Clever, fashionable and determined, her character evolves through the books and she is one of Eve's best friends. Her book on the events in 'Origin in Death', called 'Deadly Perfection - The Icove Agenda' brings her world-wide fame, which leads to her being given her own television news show focusing on crime, for which she chooses Eve as her first guest.

After her initial suspicions of Nadine, Eve likes and trusts her. She is able to feed Nadine choice pieces of information in return for her researching skills, safe in the knowledge that Nadine will not break the news until the time is right.
10. What is the name of Eve and Roarke's cat, who saves Eve's life in 'Naked in Death' and features in all the books?

Answer: Galahad

Galahad used to belong to a murder victim, and is adopted by Eve because the victim's family do not want to take him in. At the end of 'Naked in Death' he saves her life by distracting the murderer, who has Eve at gunpoint in her apartment, giving her enough time to overpower him.

It was at this point that the previously unnamed cat was given his name by Eve, because he had been her 'knight in shining armour'. Galahad saves her life again in a similar way in 'New York To Dallas'. He is described in the books as being grey coloured, big, fat and lazy, with eyes of different colours, one green and one gold.

He is owned - as far as a cat can be 'owned' - by Eve, Roarke and Summerset, all of whom feed him and pamper him. He spends a lot of time in Summerset's quarters when Eve and Roarke are not at home, and is also known to steal food when the opportunity presents itself.
