Throughout the saga, we learn more of Jasper's ability to control emotions of the people around him. In the first novel, "Twilight", Jasper's talent isn't mentioned very much, but in the next book his talent is exposed, especially when he uses it to convince Bella to attend the party that Alice is throwing for her. In "New Moon", when Bella turns 18, Alice throws a party for her at the Cullen house. When Jasper was with Maria, she gave him the job of killing the newborn vampires after their one year mark. After a while Jasper got depressed and left with two different vampires who were in a coven in which they didn't fight, but he was still depressed. So he left their coven and found Alice shortly afterwards and joined the Cullens.
