Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is name of the first book to feature Charlie Parker?

Answer: Every Dead Thing

Charlie's wife and daughter are brutally murdered in this first novel, by a sadistic killer with an eye for details and references to literature. The deaths are something that Charlie will always carry guilt for.
2. Charlie's wife and daughter were murdered. What were their names?

Answer: Susan and Jennifer

Charlie was in a bar on the night that Susan and Jennifer were murdered. As a consequence of their deaths he stops drinking, apart from an occaisional glass of wine.
3. What was the nickname of the murderer that killed Charlie's wife and child?

Answer: The Travelling Man

The Travelling Man is well educated and ruthless. Some would even call him an artist as he uses human bodies as 'artwork'.
4. In every book charlie is assisted by his 2 friends Angel and Louis. What was Angel's 'profession'?

Answer: Burglar

Angel is small, dark and very scruffy. He has a passion for Hawaiian shirts and sneakers. He is Louis' boyfriend.
5. What was Louis' 'profession'?

Answer: Hit Man

Louis is big, black and extremely mean. He has a passion for designer clothes and is always immaculately attired. He is an awesome presence, and together he and Angel are an invaluable help to Charlie. Louis is still available 'for hire'.
6. Whilst hunting down his wife and child's murderer Charlie meets his future girlfriend. What is her name?

Answer: Rachel

Rachel and Charlie have an on off relationship, until 'The White Road', the fourth Charlie Parker book. In that book they have moved into a house in Maine and are expecting their first child. Rachel's life is often put at risk because of this relationship.
7. What is the name of the second Charlie Parker novel?

Answer: Dark Hollow

Much of the action in 'Dark Hollow' takes place in Maine, as Charlie returns to his home town after his grandfather's death. His old friends Louis and Angel join him, as does Rachel Wolfe - his girlfriend. In my opinion this second novel's plot is not as good as 'Every Dead Thing', but where it's strength lies is in the way that Connolly builds up his characters and their intricate relationships.
8. In the second novel Charlie meets an old flame. What is her name?

Answer: Lorna Jennings

Charlie and Lorna had a brief and intense fling in their youth. Lorna is married to the local sheriff and this has repercussions for Charlie.
9. What is the name of the legendary 'boogeyman' from the past who is mentioned often in the second book?

Answer: Caleb Kyle

The children's rhyme says 'Caleb Kyle, Caleb Kyle when you see him run a mile'. Jellyfingers is actually the name of a 'boogeyman' from my own childhood!
10. What do Charlie, his father and his grandfather have in common?

Answer: They were all policemen

Being a policeman is a family tradition for Charlie.
11. What is the name of the third Charlie Parker novel?

Answer: The Killing Kind

'The Killing Kind' centres around a religious community and the deaths of several members nearly 40 years before Charlie becomes involved. Charlie is investigating the death of Grace Peltier.
12. In the 3rd novel, Charlie is investigating the death of a young woman, Grace Peltier, who in turn was investigating the deaths of members of a religious cult. What was the name of the cult?

Answer: The Aroostook Baptists

Charlie finds evidence that links the death of the cult and Grace. He puts his own life and the lives of Rachel and Angel in great danger. I believe this is the best of the first 4 Charlie Parker novels. It is full of menace and chilling villains.
13. The main villain in this third novel is called what?

Answer: Elias Pudd

Curtis is Grace's father. Jack Mercier is a US senator who pays Charlie to investigate Grace's death. Billy Purdue is a small time crook that appears in 'Dark Hollow'. Elias Pudd, aka Leonard Faulkner, is truly evil. With his collection of venomous spiders and his religious fervour he makes this book truly thrilling.

The Yorkshire Post said of Pudd 'a villain who sets a new benchmark in nightmare-inducing fear'.
14. Does Charlie ever see ghosts? Yes or No.

Answer: Yes

Charlie often saw the ghosts of his wife and child. When he is searching for someone he is somehow contacted from beyond the grave. Charlie discovered his 'sixth sense' after the death of his wife and child. This adds a super-natural slant to the books that adds to their mystery.
15. When Parker is investigating Grace Peltier's death he recieves a warning in his mailbox. What form does it take?

Answer: It is full of spiders

Rcluse spiders are a particular favourite of Elias Pudd. An expert in 'The White Road' says of these spiders 'Affection is pretty much the last thing the average person is going to feel for a recluse.'.
16. What is the name of the fourth Charlie Parker novel?

Answer: The White Road

This book is tying up ends left over from 'The Killing Kind'. Parker is investigating the death of Marianne Larousse, and is trying to stop Aaron Faulkner being freed from jail.
17. At the beginning of the fourth novel Aaron Faulkner is in prison. What prison is he being detained at?

Answer: Thomaston State Prison

Aaron Faulkner is awaiting trial for conspiracy to murder. He has also been charged with the murder of the Aroostook Baptists.
18. Charlie is also investigating the disappearance of a young woman in the fourth novel. What is her name?

Charlie takes over the case from My Sundquist who has taken money from the Blythes with little result. Cassie is a victim of Cyrus Nairn, and visits Charlie from beyond the grave.
