Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of animal did Matilda Jane Roberts catch and throw at the Ranger troop in the first chapter of the book?

Answer: Turtle

She caught a snapping turtle in a river and walked toward the Rangers with it. When she got closer, she "swung her arm a time or two and heaved the big turtle in the general direction of a bunch of Rangers...They scattered like quails when they saw the turtle sailing through the air."
2. There were many Rangers in the book, "Dead Man's Walk." Which of them was the oldest?

Answer: Shadrach

"The oldest Ranger, a tall, grizzled specimen with a cloudy past...".
3. Buffalo Hump had Comanche names for some of the Rangers. Which Ranger had the Comanche name, "Tail-Of-The-Bear?

Answer: Shadrach

Buffalo Hump once ate with the Rangers and wanted Matty, whom he called Turtle-Catching-Woman, to become his wife. Colonel Cobb asked his scout what Shadrach was called in Comanche and was told that it was Tail-Of-The-Bear. Cobb then told Buffalo Hump that Matty was the wife of Tail-Of-The-Bear. Buffalo Hump said that if Shadrach ever crossed the Canadian River he would take his scalp, the woman and his horse.
4. Which man did Buffalo Hump call Gun-In-The-Water?

Answer: Woodrow Call

Augustus was called "Silver Hair McCrae" because of his hair turning white at such an early age. Buffalo Hump, to the best of my knowledge, had no names for Bigfoot or Long Bill. Call got his name by shooting and killing one of Buffalo Humps' sons while in a flooded river. Buffalo Humps' son was trying to kill the Rangers by floating between the legs of a dead mule.
5. Before Woodrow Call was promoted to a corporal, someone started calling him Corporal Call. Who had the insight to name him a corporal before the promotion?

Answer: Clara Forsythe

Clara had starting calling him Corporal Call before he received his promotion. This fact did not go over very well with Augustus, who already had his sights set on Clara.
6. Although Buffalo Hump was recognized as the killer of his tribe, he was not the best thief. Which of Buffalo Humps' warriors did the Rangers consider to be the best horse thief of the Indian tribe?

Answer: Kicking Wolf

Kicking Wolf was said to be able to steal a horse with a man still sitting on it.
7. Once they were inside the leper colony, a ceremony was held. Each man had to be blindfolded and reach inside a jar full of black and white beans. A white bean meant you would live and a black bean meant you would be executed. Who was the first person to draw out a black bean?

Answer: Bigfoot Wallace

Woodrow Call was blindfolded and drew out the first bean which was white. Bigfoot Wallace drew second and pulled out the first of the black beans.
8. Buffalo Hump was the Comanche Indian in the story of "Dead Man's Walk". What was the name of the Apache Indian from the story?

Answer: Gomez

Bigfoot Wallace once had a dream that Buffalo Hump and the Apache Gomez were raiding together.
9. In the last chapter of the book, Lady Carey funded a trip back to San Antonio with the surviving Rangers. How many Rangers were alive to start the trip back with her?

Answer: Five

Augustus McCrae, Woodrow Call, Long Bill Coleman, Wesley Buttons and Quartermaster Brognoli were the only men returning. Matty (Matilda) also survived and made the return trip back to San Antonio.
10. How many lashes, with a whip, was Woodrow Call ordered to receive for attacking Colonel Caleb Cobb?

Answer: 100

Colonel Cobb surrendered all of the Rangers, including himself, to the Mexican army. After surrendering, he decided to leave with General Dimasio, of the Mexican army, to go to Santa Fe. Call was not very appreciative of the fact that they were to be given up to the Mexican army while the Colonel was taking a trip to Santa Fe.

He attacked the buggy that Cobb was sitting in and as punishment for this, was ordered to receive 100 lashes with a whip. He was told by Captain Salazar that, "Fifty lashes is usually enough to kill a man, Corporal."
