Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call joined the Rangers at a very early age. How old was Woodrow when he first became a Texas Ranger?

Answer: 19

Captain Scull had asked Call if he had ever had an office job. Call wondered why he had asked him that, since his records clearly showed that he had been a Ranger since the age of nineteen.
2. Captain Scull's horse went by many different names. Which is NOT a name that his horse was called?

Answer: Phantom Horse

His horse was named Hector. He was also called the Warhorse or the Buffalo Horse, because of his great size.
3. Tana was a member of Buffalo Hump's tribe who stole a white woman and her children. Although the other members of the tribe told him he needed to take the captives back to Buffalo Hump, Tana wanted to kill the white woman before she could be taken back. Why did he want to kill her immediately instead of giving the captive to Buffalo Hump?

Answer: Revenge for the white men who killed his father

Tana's father, Black Hand, was one of many chiefs who were called to parley with the white man. When all the chiefs went inside the tent, they were arrested for not returning all of the white captives. Because Black Hand was the most important chief to attend, they hung him with a fine chain so that he would die slowly.

They then cut off his head and kept it in a sack, with the promise that it would only be returned if all the white captives were returned. It was too late for that, as all the captives were tortured and killed as soon as the treachery of the white man was found out.

His father's head was never returned.
4. Inez Scull was married to Captain Scull, but Inez was not her real name. What was her given name?

Answer: Dolly

Inish said that she only chose Inez to match his name.
5. Kicking Wolf stole a horse from Inish Scull and took it to Mexico. What other member of the tribe went with Kicking Wolf into Mexico?

Answer: Three Birds

Three Birds thought the trip into Mexico would bring them death. He was partially right. He was killed and Kicking Wolf was tied to the back of a horse and let go.
6. Kicking Wolf took the horse to Ahumado in Mexico. When Inish Scull arrived, Ahumado had been cooking his horse in a pit for three days. He offered Scull part of his own horse to eat. What part of the horse did Scull take the meat from?

Answer: Cheek

He was told he should "eat hearty before we put you in the cage". Scull didn't ask them about the cage he was to be put in. He took his knife and started cutting chunks of meat off of a cheek.
7. Ahumado had an old man in his camp who was skilled at skinning people. What was the name of the skinner?

Answer: Goyeto

Goyeto was supposedly so skilled with the knives that he could take a whole skin off of a man, or an inch of skin, in a strip, from scalp to heel.
8. What relation was Xitla to Ahumado?

Answer: Cousin

They were born on the same minute of the same day, and their mothers were sisters. They were linked in destiny from birth, to die at the same moment. Xitla's mother told her to never reveal her true name to Ahumado, fearing he would try to change that destiny.
9. Woodrow had told Maggie to hide in case of an Indian attack. Where did she hide when Buffalo Hump attacked Austin?

Answer: Under the smokehouse

She hid under the smokehouse, where a sow had wallowed out a depression under the building.
10. On one expedition, to determine how many Comanches were left in their strongholds for the winter, Major Featherstonhaugh left the troop to go back. What did he go back for?

Answer: A compass

The compass was from his father and was made in Reading, England. Augustus offered the Major his compass but the Major refused it. He left the troop to go back and find his own.
