Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Stabbed in the base of the skull

Interestingly, in the David Suchet TV version, Lord Edgware is stabbed in the neck instead.
2. Poirot and Captain Hastings take on the case, but which well-known detective and friend of Poirot is officially in charge?

Answer: Chief Inspector Japp

Fan favourite Chief Inspector Japp leads the investigation. He is also featured in many other Poirot novels and short stories such as 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles' and 'One, Two, Buckle My Shoe'.
3. The murderer soon claims a second victim by giving them an overdose of veronal. But who is the victim?

Answer: Carlotta Adams

This convinces the police that Carlotta Adams had something to do with Lord Edgware's death.
4. Who is Jane Wilkinson smitten with?

Answer: The Duke of Merton

Jane Wilkinson wants to divorce Lord Edgware so she an marry the wealthy and well-known Duke of Merton.
5. Which two people see a figure who looked like Jane Wilkinson enter Lord Edgware's house on the night of his death?

Answer: Miss Carroll and Alton the Butler

Miss Carroll and Alton see 'Jane Wilkinson' enter the house. Alton admits her to the house, and Miss Carroll catches a glimpse of her from upstairs.
6. Poirot sets himself a set number of questions, and states that once all are answered he will know the solution to the mystery. How many questions does he have?

Answer: Five

In typical Poirot fashion, the questions seem to be trivial and to have little relevance to the mystery. But once he explains the answers, their significance becomes clear.
7. Which clues aid Poirot?

Answer: All three in question

A small inscribed medicine box contained the sleeping powder with which Carlotta Adams is poisoned; Donald Ross is involved in conversations at two different dinner parties about the Judgment of Paris, which leaves him puzzled; Miss Carrroll's pince-nez cast doubt on the accuracy of her observation on the night of the first murder.
8. Donald Ross is the third murder victim. What is his job?

Answer: Actor

Donald Ross is an actor. He was disappointed when Poirot and Hastings did not recognise him. He was killed because he realised that he had been talking to two different women who called themselves Jane Wilkinson. At the first dinner party, 'Jane' had conversed knowledgeably about the classical reference to the Judgment of Paris; at the second one, 'Jane' understood it to refer to the world of fashion.
9. Early in the novel, Bryan Martin visits Poirot to tell him that he was being stalked by a man with a significant feature. What was it?

Answer: A gold tooth

Poirot later realises that the whole question of a stalker was in fact a hoax on Bryan Martin's part in an attempt to set up Jane Wilkinson.
10. In the end, Poirot (naturally) deduces the killer, and he/she is arrested. However, they send Poirot one last message before they are soon to be hanged. By what form of communication does Poirot receive this?

Answer: A letter

In this letter the killer contemplates his/her actions and how he/she was caught, and ends by wondering why hangings are not done in public anymore.
