Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It was Robert ('Robbie') Burns who compared his loved one to a rose. Do you know what word is missing from this quotation? 'O my Luve's like a ___ red rose That's newly sprung in June: O my Luve's like the melodie, That's sweetly played in tune.'

Answer: red

This short poem has only four verses which speak of a parting between the poet and his loved one but there is the promise of a return in the last verse. -
'And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve!
And fare-thee-weel a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.'
2. Do you know the Gilbert and Sullivan light operettas? Can you find the words which are missing from this excerpt from 'The Yeomen of the Guard'? 'It's the song of a merryman, moping mum, Whose soul was sad and whose glance was glum, Who sipped no sup ,and who __ __ __, As he sighed for the love of a layde.'

Answer: craved no crumb

Poor Jack Point! He is the merryman who sings this sad, little ditty in 'The Yeomen of the Guard' - also known as 'The Merryman and his Maid'. Alas, his lady marries another and he is left, at the end of the opera, singing his doleful song!

W.S. Gilbert wrote the verse (libretto) which Sir Arthur Sullivan set to music.
3. The following lines, written in the 16th. century, are from a poem by Sir Philip Sidney. Do you know what the missing word is? 'My true love hath my ___ and I have his, By just exchange one for the other giv'n. I hold his dear and mine he cannot miss, There never was a better bargain driven.'

Answer: heart

Sir Philip Sidney was many things in his time. As well as being a poet, he was a courtier, diplomat and a soldier. He is remembered not just for these things but also for his selfless act on the battlefield. - When he was wounded and needed to drink the water which he had, he gave it to another fallen soldier with these words, 'Thy necessity is yet greater than mine'.
4. What is the missing word which fits into the blank in these lines by Isaac Watts? 'Love so amazing, so divine Demands my soul, my ___, my all.'

Answer: life

Not many people think of the author of these lines as a poet but he published four collections of verse. He is chiefly remembered for his hymns which include 'O, God our help in ages past' and 'When I survey the wondrous cross' which is the hymn from which the above extract is taken. He wrote poetry for children, too; 'How doth the little, busy bee?' is his.
5. I think that the poem from which I have taken the following extract is one of the greatest love poems ever written. It was written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It is for you to find the missing word. 'How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My ___ can reach when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.'

Answer: soul

This very accomplished and cultured lady was the wife of Robert Browning - one of England's great poets. In its early days, the course of true love did not run smoothly for this couple. Elizabeth's father was strongly opposed to the idea of marriage for his children. Because of this, the couple married in secret and fled to Italy where they settled in Florence.
6. In literature, both in poetry and in prose, we are constantly reminded that it is much better to live with love than with hatred - as in the following quotation from the Bible. (The King James' version.) 'Better is a ___ of herbs where love is, Than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.' What word have I left out?

Answer: dinner

This is from the Book of Proverbs - Chapter 15, verse 17.
7. Here's a question for music lovers. The great Bard, William Shakespeare, wrote these words. 'If music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it, that surfeiting, The appetite may sicken and so ___.' The last word is blank. What should it be?

Answer: die

These are the opening words of Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night' spoken by the Duke of Illyria.
8. This extract is from 'The Song of Solomon', in the King James' version of the Bible, where a lover calls his beloved to enjoy the pleasures of Springtime with him. Which word have I left out? 'Rise up, my love, my ___ one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land: The fig tree putteth forth her green figs and the vines with the tender grape Give a good smell. Arise, my love, my ___ one, and come away.'

Answer: fair

Like all poetry, this extract needs to be read aloud for its lovely, lilting poetry to be fully appreciated.
You can find these words in 'The Song of Solomon', chapter 2, verses 10 to 13.
9. You may not believe in the sentiment of this quotation from a poem by George Gordon Lord Byron but are you familiar enough with it to know what the missing word is? 'Man's love is of man's life a ___ apart, 'Tis woman's whole existence.'

Answer: thing

Perhaps this was truer in Byron's time than it is nowadays. It seems to imply that men, as opposed to women, are uncaring. That's not an idea I care to believe in, myself. The interpretation depends on the meaning of the word 'love'.
10. These well-known, and often-quoted lines, are from a Shakespearean Sonnet (number 116). What word is missing? 'Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which ___ when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove.'

Answer: alters

There isn't much I can say about this: it speaks for itself. In case you don't know it, here is the rest of the sonnet.-
'O, no, it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.'
