4. How does Maurice meet Clive Durham?

Answer: Maurice is friends with Clive's roommate.

5. How many years are Clive and Maurice together?

Answer: two

Though the extent of their relationship is hazy, we at least gather Maurice sees Clive as a significant other, and they see each other every Wednesday and weekend. Clive is reluctant to show affection toward Maurice, though Maurice's love is evident.
6. After Clive ends the relationship, what does Maurice consider doing?

Answer: committing suicide

Clive falls ill, and after his sickness, he is no longer attracted to or in love with Maurice. The reason for the change of heart is never explained by Forster, and the reader never knows if he is in fact heterosexual or is too afraid to continue his affair with Maurice. Upon the break up Maurice falls into a depression and feels his life is worthless without a lover.
7. What is Maurice's occupation?

Answer: Stockbroker

Maurice follows in his deceased father's footsteps and takes his place at the firm.
8. What is the name of Clive's wife?

Answer: Anne

After his relationship with Maurice, Clive marries a dull yet acceptable young woman. Though he invites Maurice to visit at his home, Clive spends little time with him and seems fearful Maurice will tell about their relationship.
9. Where does Maurice meet Alec for the first time?

Answer: At Clive's home

Though Clive has little time for his former lover during his visit, Maurice is actively pursued by a handsome young groundskeeper. Alec takes every opportunity he has to converse with Maurice, though at first Maurice seems indifferent to the youth.
10. What is Alec's occupation?

Answer: Gamekeeper

As an under-gamekeeper (working under the head gamekeeper), Alec knows the ins and outs of the estate at Penge, and is able to see Maurice often and easily. On their first night together, Alec enters Maurice's room through the window, using a ladder that he had used to get onto the roof for patching.
11. During his visit at Clive's house in Penge, Maurice celebrates his birthday. How old is he?

Answer: 24

Though technically Clive's guest, Alec is the first one to wish Maurice a happy birthday.
12. What is the name of the man Maurice sees for hypnosis?

Answer: Mr. Lasker-Jones

At the time, homosexuality was considered a mental illness. Maurice hoped to be normal and find happiness through marriage, so he went to a hypnotist to be "cured."
13. At this time in England, homosexuality was considered a crime. What two countries had recently made it not punishable by law?

Answer: France and Italy

When Mr. Lasker-Jones is unable to "cure" Maurice, he recommends Maurice move to a country that has adopted the Code Napoleon. Then he would not have to worry about the possibility of being imprisoned if someone were to find out.
14. What did Maurice have recurring dreams about?

Answer: A friend

From his time at Sunnington until he meets Alec, Maurice has a recurring dream that is simply a voice saying "this is your friend," and a feeling of warmth and tenderness that surrounds him. After their first night together Maurice tells Alec the dream, but Alec is distracted by the church bell ringing.
15. Where does Alec stay for two nights waiting for Maurice?

After his night with Alec, Maurice panics, thinking he has ruined his chance of achieving normalcy. He returns to London and ignores Alec's letters asking him to come back to Penge.
16. Why does Maurice finally agree to meet Alec?

Answer: Alec threatens him with blackmail

Hurt and angered by Maurice ignoring him, Alec threatens him with blackmail so he will be forced to see him again. Maurice knows how this could ruin a man, and agrees to meet Alec before he leaves for the Argentine.
17. Where in London do Alec and Maurice meet?

Answer: the British Museum

Maurice chooses a large and well-known building, assuming Alec is not familar with the London area.

Alec plans to join his brother in business in the Argentine. It is only at the last minute does Alec decide to stay in England with Maurice, purposefully missing his ship.
19. What ship is Alec supposed to board?

Answer: the S.S. Normannia

When Alec's ship is set to leave, Maurice goes to the dock to see him. Instead he meets Alec's family and the clergyman from Penge, but Alec never shows. Maurice instinctively knows Alec has changed his mind and is waiting for him at the boathouse, and he rushes back to Penge.
20. Though Forster decides to leave out the epilogue, some versions still include it. What occupation do Alec and Maurice have in the epilogue?
