1. Modesty first meets him when her plane is forced down in Kalimba, where he is working at a mission. He calls her "old girl" until she asks him to stop.
2. He is a former Network operative, a Frenchman who specializes in seducing women and learning their secrets. Modesty has thought him long dead when an unexpected clue leads her to the plantation where he has been a slave for several years in "Last Day in Limbo."
3. Although he claims to be a metallurgist when he first appears in "I, Lucifer", he is really a mathematician who investigates psychic phenomena. His dry wit and self-proclaimed cowardice belie his courage under fire. After he marries Dinah Pilgrim, they both remain friends with Modesty and Willie, appearing in several adventures with them.

7. This "honest cop" is an acquaintance of Modesty's Network days. In "A Taste for Death" he helps her rescue Willie Garvin and Dinah Pilgrim from Panama. He eventually rises to Minister of Defence in that country.
8. A pilot and amateur spelunker, he is rescued by Modesty after a fall in "The Silver Mistress". He's a young man with a bit of a volatile temper, and an annoying habit of calling Modesty "Ducky."
9. Rescued from the sea, in "Dragon's Claw," by Modesty as she is sailing alone from Australia to New Zealand, he is an artist who has amnesia. He never fully regains his memory, and is killed by the same villains who kidnapped and brainwashed him before Modesty found him.
10. Modesty's first love from her Network days is half Spanish and half Irish. She meets him again when he is recruiting mercenaries for Karz in "Sabretooth."
