Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tom Natsworthy resides on which Traction City?

Answer: London

This London consists of many tiers, just like a wedding cake. The more important people in society live in higher tiers.
2. Tom Natsworthy works for the Guild of Engineers.

Answer: False

Tom works for the Guild of Historians. His favourite place to be is in the museum.
3. Valentine's first name is Thaddeus.

Answer: True

He and his daughter, Katherine, arrive in the Gut of London, and meet Tom. Valentine is Tom's hero, so naturally Tom was nervous when he was around him.
4. Which Guild does Clytie Potts belong to?

Answer: Guild of Historians

Melliphant, a First Class Apprentice, is trying to impress Clytie as he and Tom watch as London devours another Traction City. There are no such Guilds as Workers and Parliament.
5. MEDUSA will bring London glory and honour.

Answer: False

MEDUSA self destructs on London, near to the end of the book. Fortunately, Tom Natsworthy is not aboard London, because he is 'accidentally' thrown overboard by Thaddeus Valentine earlier on.
6. Who has a pet wolf called Dog?

Answer: Katherine Valentine

Katherine Valentine is the owner of Dog. Clytie Potts doesn't have any pets, nor does Tom or Chudleigh Pomeroy, the Head Historian.
7. Tom ends up with Katherine Valentine in the Out-Country when he is thrown off London.

Answer: False

Tom ends up with Hester Shaw. Hester has only one eye and a huge scar that runs down the side of her face. This scar was given to her by Thaddeus Valentine, whom Hester was trying to kill. Later in the book, we are told about the relationship between Hester and Valentine...
8. Tom and his partner have an airship called the '13th Floor Elevator'.

Answer: False

The '13th Floor Elevator' belongs to Thaddeus Valentine. The airship in question is the Jenny Haniver, which once belonged to Anna Fang.
9. Who is the main Stalker in the novel?

Answer: Shrike

Shrike plays a major role further on in the series. Anna Fang becomes a Stalker, but is not the main one.
10. Which large group is against Traction Cities?

Answer: The Anti-Tractionist League

The Anti-Tractionists live in static settlements and do not drive on the ground. They use airships, however, to travel distances.
