Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While we never meet Black Aliss, she figures largely into the lives of the witches, especially Granny Weatherwax. What is Black Aliss' real name?

Answer: Aliss Demurrage

Aliss Demurrage, also called Black Aliss, was perhaps the most powerful witch of them all. She once sent an entire castle to sleep for one hundred years, yet met her end when pushed into an oven by two Überwaldean children. Granny Weatherwax (who could be more powerful than her forbear) takes great pains to ensure that she does not follow the path taken by Black Aliss.
2. When vampyres try to take over the kingdom of Lancre in "Carpe Jugulum", she is called from the throne and back into service to save her husband and his kingdom. Who is this witch, who puts great stock in crystals and folk wisdom, and generally doesn't wear black, but does wear lots of occult jewelry?

Answer: Magrat Garlick

Called "a wet hen" by Granny, Magrat was the maiden witch of the Lancre trio. She often served as a mediator between Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg. Magrat became the Queen of Lancre upon her marriage to King Verence.
She must resume her place in the coven (as the mother, thus forcing Nanny Ogg into the role of the crone) in "Carpe Jugulum", when Granny Weatherwax temporarily stepped down because she felt slighted after not receiving her invitation to the ceremony where Magrat's baby will be named.
Magrat's mother intended to name her Margaret, but her poor spelling meant that the child became known as Magrat. Intending that her daughter should not suffer as she did, Magrat carefully wrote the baby's name so that the priest would get it right when he announced the name. Magrat and Verence's daughter carries the name Princess Esmerelda Margaret Note Spelling.
3. The sister of Granny Weatherwax, she uses mirrors to further her magic. Who is this fairy godmother/witch?

Answer: Lilith de Tempscire

Also known as Lily Weatherwax, Lilith de Tempscire is the bad fairy godmother of Ella featured in "Witches Abroad". She is the power behind the throne of Genua.
Granny blames Lily for being the bad sister and having all the fun while Granny must be the good sister.
4. In "The Wee Free Men", she was made a temporary Kelda by the Nac Mac Feegle. What is the name of the young witch who fought the Queen of the Elves with a frying pan and saved her little brother in the process?

Answer: Tiffany Aching

Tiffany Aching grew up in The Chalk, and is an expert cheesemaker. She is very serious about her witching, and is reminiscent of a young Granny Weatherwax.
The Nac Mac Feegle call Tiffany their "hag o' the hills" and they keep watch over her in their own rowdy way.
5. A black cockerel named Legba is the familiar of what witch?

Answer: Erzulie Gogol

Mrs. Gogol is a voodoo practitioner who worked with the Lancre witches in "Witches Abroad". She lives in a swamp near Genua with Baron Saturday, in a home on duck-like feet. Her home is reminiscent of the one found in the Russian story of Baba Yaga.
I'd love to have seen her show up more often!
6. Who was Ella's good fairy godmother in "Witches Abroad"?

Answer: Desiderata Hollow

Desiderata Hollow died in the beginning of this book, but not before sending her fairy godmother wand to Magrat.
She was one of the few witches to use magic for household chores.
7. The oldest friend of Granny Weatherwax, mother of a large brood of children and companion of Greebo, she believes that housework should happen to other people. Who is the 'mother' in the Lancre coven?

Answer: Nanny Ogg

Nanny's daughters-in-law handle all her cleaning while she directs them.
Nanny has many useful talents, including being able to get along in any language, singing amusing songs, making a potent apple (well, mostly apples) liquor known as scumble, and completely ignoring the evil lurking in her cat Greebo (who will always be a soft innocent grey kitten in her eyes).
8. It is said that inside every fat girl there is a thin girl waiting to get out. Before assuming her role as the 'maiden' in the Lancre coven, whose thin girl got out and took over in "Maskerade"?

Answer: Agnes Nitt

Agnes Nitt's thin girl was called Perdita X. Dream. The X, of course, stood for "a person who has a cool and exiting middle name". Agnes and Perdita seem to be frequently at odds as to who would control her body. Being of two minds makes Agnes highly resistant to mental manipulation, as we saw in "Carpe Jugulum", and means that she can sing in harmony with herself.
9. This witch, who apprenticed Tiffany Aching, was not liked, but was respected. Which witch knew the "secret of Boffo"?

Answer: Eumenides Treason

The secret of Boffo was, of course, Boffo's joke shop in Ankh-Morpork, where Eumenides Treason bought most of her witching equipment. She is deaf and blind, but gets along just fine by borrowing the senses of those around her.
Like all witches, Miss Treason knows the date and time of her death, and is able to enjoy her own funeral the day before ceremonially stopping the heavy iron clock she wears on her belt.
10. This witch rides a "borrowed" broom that has to be bump started, and is reluctant to openly use magic. Who is the leader of the Lancre coven and master (er, mistress) of headology?

Answer: Granny Weatherwax

You just can't talk about the Discworld witches without giving a mention to Granny Weatherwax!
Granny's broom is a hand-me-down "borrowed" from her colleague Hilta Goatfounder, and has had both the handle and bristles replaced many times. You need to get a running start to get it moving, but once it goes, it's one of the fastest.
A coven needs a maiden, a mother and a crone. Magrat was the maiden, until she married and Agnes stepped in; Nanny Ogg was the mother; Granny Weatherwax was... the other one.
