Arly is short for Ariel. Arly was not named after the character in "The Tempest". Her mother named Arly after the aerial photograph of Maggody that hangs in her bedroom. Ruby Bee is not a very good speller. Arly got her job as Chief of Police after the previous chief snuck out of town.

2. Arly's mom is Ruby Bee Hanks. Ruby Bee is the owner and proprietor of the Ruby Bee's Bar and Grill and the Flamingo Motel. What is Ruby Bee short for?

Answer: Rubella Belinda

Ruby Bee is short for Rubella Belinda. When Ruby was born there was German Measles going around and Ruby's mom thought Rubella had a nice ring. As Arly says, "The Hanks clan is notorious for whimsy when naming innocent babies." Ruby Bee lives in unit one of her six-unit hotel so that she can keep an eye on what goes on.

The Buchanons are a large portion of the population of Maggody. Jim Bob is the mayor, his wife is a Buchanon by birth and marriage. Raz Buchanon is the local moonshiner who lives with his pet pig. Paulie was Arly's deputy in the first book. As Arly says, "Buchanons are known for a certain amount of animal cunning, but nothing that would outwit an above average raccoon".
